🚨 WORKING TOGETHER TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN 🚨

The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office is proud to work alongside law enforcement agencies across Louisiana to identify, investigate, and put child predators behind bars.

Today’s predators don’t recognize parish lines—and neither do we.

Through our partnership with the Louisiana Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, along with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, investigators are able to share information, resources, and expertise to move quickly when children are at risk.

A recent investigation involving multiple parishes and four law enforcement agencies demonstrated exactly why these partnerships matter. By working together, investigators were able to coordinate an arrest and execute a search warrant within hours, ultimately leading to charges involving the exploitation of children.

The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office remains committed to one mission above all: protecting our children and holding those who seek to harm them accountable.

For Immediate Release-September 4, 2026

At approximately 11:00 a.m. today, our communications center received a 911 call from a parent reporting that their child would not wake up. Deputies arrived at a home on Clyde Smith Road and found a four-year old girl deceased.

Detectives responded and are working the scene. The Washington Parish Coroner’s Office has taken custody and will determine the cause of death. Until that determination is made, I am not going to speculate about what happened, and I would ask others not to either.

The family is entitled to grieve without an audience.

I will release what I can once the coroner’s findings are in and the investigation allows.

Traffic Alert Roadway Completely Blocked. An 18-Wheeler wreck has occurred on Hwy 62 North of Hwy 10, resulting in a total blockage of the roadway.
No other vehicles are involved in the wreck. Power lines are down in the area. Traffic is unable to pass through. Please avoid this area and use an alternate route/detour until further notice. Please slow down, use extreme caution, and allow emergency crews and utility personnel room to work.

Charles Frank Nickel Jr., 58, was arrested by Deputies of the Washington Parish Sheriff, on Saturday, August 15th, 2026, on the following charges: 1 – Count L.R.S. 14:81.2 Molestation of a Juvenile (Victim Under Age 13), 1 – Count L.R.S. 14:89.1 Aggravated Crimes Against Nature (In**st) (Victim Under Age 13) and 1 – Count L.R.S. 14:81 Indecent Behavior With Juvenile (Victim Under Age 13).

The arrest is the result of an investigation into a case that began in 2018. At that time, deputies of the Washington Parish Sheriff received a complaint from an adult victim of a s*xual battery that occurred when she was a child. On April 15th, 2026 detectives with the Special Investigations Unit of the Washington Parish Sheriff reopened the case and began the thorough investigation that resulted in the arrest of Mr. Nickel.

Upon his arrest, Nickel was interviewed by detectives and made admissions of s*xual abuse. He also made admissions of being in possession of child s*xual abuse material (CSAM) located on devices in his home in Denham Springs. This admission resulted in information being turned over to the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force of the Livingston Parish Sheriff. Deputies of the Livingston Parish Sheriff executed a search warrant for Nickel’s residence in Denham Springs, La. and seized multiple computers and electronic storage devices containing CSAM.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone who believes they may have been a victim or who has information related to this investigation is encouraged to come forward and contact the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. Information may be shared confidentially.

To protect the privacy of the victim and preserve the integrity of the investigation, no additional details are being released at this time. Sheriff Smith remains committed to protecting children, thoroughly investigating allegations of abuse, and holding offenders accountable through the judicial process.

All people accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Starting on August 14th and lasting until September 7th WPSO will be part of the Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over National Mobilization. The special enforcement campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and managed by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over helps law enforcement agencies put more officers and deputies on the road, specifically to get drunk and drugged drivers off the road. Already this year, WPSO has handled 56 impaired driver cases. Please drink and drive responsibly, and never at the same time.

UPDATE:
Two Fatalities Confirmed Following Small Aircraft Crash

Bogalusa, LA — August 6, 2026 — Authorities have confirmed the identities of the two people who died in the small aircraft crash that occurred earlier today near the Bogalusa airport.

The victims have been identified as William "Bill" Day, 68, and his wife, Tommie Day, 69, both of Seguin, Texas. The aircraft crashed at approximately 10:48 AM in the vicinity of the George R. Carr Memorial Airfield in Bogalusa, LA. Both occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The next of kin have been notified.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as appropriate.

Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Awarded

Washington Parish Sheriff Jason Smith was awarded the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $12,014.


This money will be used to purchase four new Getac Rugged Laptops and docking stations.


By receiving this grant, we are able to upgrade our capabilities and work more effectively to serve our community.

Click it or Ticket

In May, Washington Parish deputy sheriffs continued their partnership with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission by participating in the Click it or Ticket National Mobilization.

During this mobilization, deputies reported 555 stops or contacts, with four no seatbelt tickets, two no child restraint tickets, one no driver's license ticket, one expired plate ticket, one window tint violation, one car seat violation and an arrest for possession of ma*****na.

Since 2020, Washington Parish has lost over 70 lives in traffic-related events. Grants like these help ensure we can keep deputies on the roads and prevent more of these deaths.
