Doral Mayor Christi Fraga is responding to business owners who say increased ICE enforcement activity is frightening customers and workers and hurting their businesses. ICE agents were seen Wednesday in different areas of Doral, and business owners say the presence of immigration agents is having an immediate economic impact. Katia Rios of Pipo Burgers said sales have dropped 70%. Fraga said she understands the concerns but that local governments cannot prevent federal immigration agents from conducting enforcement operations.

For some business owners, the impact extends beyond declining sales. Angelica Yepez, a restaurant co-owner, said she lost six workers who feared being detained despite having applied for political asylum. Business owners are asking city leaders for more direct assistance, while Fraga said the city is making phone calls and having conversations but has limited ability to intervene in federal immigration operations. As enforcement continues, business owners say they are concerned about customers and workers becoming too afraid to leave their homes.
