Your late night AI chats might be quietly draining rivers đź’§ A new report from the nonprofit Ceres found that electricity powering data centers across seven major states now uses more water every year than every city in California combined. That is twelve times the combined annual water use of Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Washington DC.

Most of this water disappears silently through power plants rather than the cooling towers people usually blame 🌍 Many of these plants sit in regions already facing drought and water stress. As AI keeps growing quietly in the background, families and farmers nearby may feel the pressure first. The real cost of AI may not be measured in dollars but in water 💧

Mervin Raudabaugh, an 86-year-old farmer in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, turned down a data center developer’s offer of roughly $15.7 million for his 261 acres, choosing instead to sell the development rights to the Lancaster Farmland Trust for just under $2 million.

Raudabaugh had farmed the land for more than six decades, milking cows there for 51 years, after developers offered $60,000 an acre once they identified the property along the Interstate 81 corridor as a prime data center site. According to Laura Brown, coordinator of the township’s land preservation program, the developers pressured him to the point that his attorney was considering legal action against them. She then contacted the Lancaster Farmland Trust, whose president and CEO, Jeff Swinehart, said Raudabaugh “was really committed to ensure that these farms remain open and available for agriculture.”

The December deal, finalized through a conservation easement, means the land can only ever be farmed, even if Raudabaugh eventually sells it outright. “I was not interested in destroying my farms,” he told Fox43 News. “That was the bottom line. It really wasn’t so much the economic end of it. I just didn’t want to see these two farms destroyed.”

Raudabaugh has voiced concern about a separate data center rising nearby in Middlesex Township, saying of the development pressure facing farmland across the region, “It breaks my heart to think of what’s going to take place here, because only the land that’s preserved here is going to be here.”

A little Dolly wisdom worth carrying with us. đź’š

“We should pay more attention. We’re just mistreating Mother Nature—that’s like being ugly to your mama.”

Dolly Parton had a way of putting things simply — and making them stick.

Today, we remember a legend who left the world a little brighter, and this reminder to take better care of the world we share. 🌎

Rest in peace, Dolly. 🕊️
