Guys, some of you are members of another Quartercav group and are involved in a discussion about why the Ma Duece was removed from the commander's cupola and mounted on a tripod. The reasons I've seen posted are correct but none are the primary reason it was done. It was done because the cupola mounted gun couldn't be depressed enough to be effective in up close and personal jungle fighting, whereas the tripod mounted .50 could depress and smoke the ground just a few meters out. Very desirable in an ambush or jungle busting. I can't post to that group because I am not a member, and I am too overloaded with internet requirements now to add to the load. Just letting you guys know. I'm sure you old TCs already figured this out.

30 March 1969. 50 years ago, the First Platoon assaulted deep into the Michelin rubber plantation with the rest of Bravo Troop plus Charlie Troop and a tank company of the 11th Cavalry. We slashed into a well trained and fortified NVA regiment. We suffered losses that haunt us to this day, but they lost more than 200 soldiers and were combat ineffective when they retreated over the next few days. To you wonderful troopers of the Fightin' First who unhesitatingly went on line and attacked the most lethal enemy force we faced in all of 1969 and ruled the day, I salute you all with great respect and I lift a toast to all our brothers who fell that week.

This was my situation in rice paddies with all you long drinks of water.

I established this page to give us a place to chat and to post photos. Nothing wrong with the way we've been doing it, but it just seemed to me that we've hit the point where our own page will give us photo archives in one place and a way to share with each other quickly. If in my haste I missed one of us with the invitations, please correct my error ASAP. -- Jim Pitts
