Our most sincere condolences go out to Joyce Fee on the passing of Doc. Not only was he a pillar of the community and a fixture at Franklin High School events, he was also quite familiar with our EMS personnel. Many Sandycreek Township residents were Doc's patients, and it was not unusual for us to roll up on a medical call and see Doc's pickup already there. We'd make contact with the patient and ask Doc what he wanted from us; the usual answer was "let's put him on some oxygen, and then I'll show you some stuff". Once the patient was stable, he loved teaching our personnel about how to fine-tune our diagnosis and treatment, especially on respiratory distress calls. He also was well equipped for home treatment; he had his own personal EKG/defibrillator that he bought out of his own pocket so that he could better treat his house-call patients.
Doc was also an inveterate firewood collector and it wasn't unusual for him to appear at the scene of a tree-down call and end up with a truck full of wood to feed his outdoor furnace. One memorable call was for a person struck by a falling tree. Due to the patient's condition, we made the decision to fly them from the East Grove Church. Stat Medevac landed and the first person out of the helicopter was Doc's wife, Joyce. She ran to the ambulance, looked in at the patient, took a big sigh of relief, and said "if that would have been Doc, I would have killed him!"
Our community is a lonelier place with Dr. Fee's passing, and our heart goes out to his family and friends. Thank you for everything you've done, Doc!
