Macon County Democratic Party

Macon County Democratic Party To inform the residents of Macon County, North Carolina about candidates for political office.

Democrats care about all people, our environment, equal opportunity for everyone, free and fair elections, truth, and justice. The Macon County Democratic Party takes pride in being
part of America’s oldest political party. As Democrats, we
believe that government should serve the people and that
in so doing, it should be open and fair, improving our lives
and creating opportunity for all. In orde

r to strengthen our
democracy, we believe that all citizens should be able to
participate in an economy that provides first and foremost
for the basic human needs of food, shelter, personal
safety, adequate health care, worthwhile employment and
educational opportunity. We take pride in our democratic heritage as a party of
spiritual and patriotic values; a party of inclusiveness; a
party of diversity; a party of compassion; a party of social
justice; and, a party of responsible leadership. This Party fully supports the sanctity of the Bill of Rights
and opposes any frivolous or malicious amendments to the
Constitution. This Party shall provide an avenue for the free and open
expression of diverse ideas and opinions, including the
right of every person to dissent. It shall work to promote
government which is responsive to the legitimate needs,
interests, and aspirations of every man, woman, and child
in a manner which does not diminish human dignity or those
fundamental rights, which are the birthright of all people of
a free and democratic nation. We, the Macon County Democrats, seize this agenda and
vigilantly defend our historic democratic heritage. We will
not abdicate our historic role as the Party of action and the
Party of progress in this county, state, and nation, for the
lives and the livelihoods of its people are our sacred trust. Democrats stand for an abiding faith in the judgment of hardworking American families, and a commitment to helping the excluded, the disenfranchised and the poor strengthen our nation by earning themselves a piece of the American Dream. We remember that our country was sculpted by immigrants and slaves, their children and grandchildren. Even today, it is our diversity above all else that provides us with our enduring strength. Democrats believe that each of us has an obligation to each other, to our neighbors and our communities. Each of us has a role to play in creating our future—and while we have made great progress as a nation, we know that our work is never done.

Can your household afford an extra $1,967 in extra costs?

According to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, that's exactly how much Donald Trump's tariffs have cost every single North Carolina household since January 2025. The Trump tariffs have added a total of $8.8 billion in costs since they were imposed - the 13th highest in the country.

3RD CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ON THE BALLOT NOVEMBER 3, 2026
(There are three (3) constitutional amendments placed on the ballot by the General Assembly this fall. If these are passed, they will change the Constitution of North Carolina. It is much harder to change the Constitution than it is to pass a law. The Constitution can only be changed by voter approval or by 60% vote of the members of both the House and the Senate. These are extremely important to understand. I will speak to these one at a time in separate posts.)
The third amendment to change our NC Constitution is to require limits on property tax increases by local governments.
I hope you will join me in voting AGAINST this amendment to our NC Constitution! Property taxes are the main source of income for local government. This feels like an attempt to consolidate even more power in Raleigh over county and city governments, creating a top-down government that weakens the power of your voice. This is why we must THINK carefully about these amendments. There is already a law in NC that says local governments cannot raise taxes above $1.50 per $100 valuation. No county has a tax rate that even comes near that. Macon County’s tax rate is .27 cents per $100 valuation. Local government leaders are closest to the people and keenly aware of the need to keep property taxes low. Your voice is heard most powerfully by your local government. Let’s keep it that way. This vague amendment adds nothing of value. I will be voting AGAINST this amendment.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE MAKING IT HAPPEN! YOU INSPIRE ME EVERY-SINGLE-DAY.

One of the greatest lessons... is that democracy is almost never saved by famous people. It is sustained by people whose names most Americans will never know: the woman behind a folding table registering voters, the college student knocking on doors after class, the organizer driving two hours to a community meeting attended by twelve people, the volunteer making phone calls, the lawyer challenging a bad law, the grandmother making sandwiches, the pastor opening the church doors, the person printing flyers at midnight and the neighbor who simply says, "I'll drive you to the polls."
