We wrapped up Fire Prevention Week yesterday after a busy week of school visits throughout our community.

Our crews spent time talking with students about fire safety, showing them what firefighters look and sound like in full gear, and giving them a closer look inside and around our fire trucks — including the equipment we carry and use.

Most importantly, we had a great time getting to spend time with so many students and teachers throughout the week.

Thank you to each of the schools that welcomed us in and helped make another Fire Prevention Week a great one!

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.

Night Dive Training

This week, crews from all three shifts completed shift-level dive training after dark.

Divers and support personnel worked through nighttime water rescue operations, focusing on communication, search techniques, and working safely in reduced visibility.

Firefighter/Paramedic Keegan Sichting is deploying with Indiana Task Force 1 as the team prepares to assist with search and rescue operations related to Hurricane Isaias.

We’re proud to have Keegan representing the Bargersville Community Fire Department alongside responders from across Indiana.

Charge Safely 🔋

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but safe charging habits matter.

A few reminders:

Use the charger and charging equipment designed for your device.

-Avoid charging devices under pillows, blankets, or on soft surfaces where heat can build up.
-Keep charging devices away from combustible materials.
-Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, leaking, or unusually hot.
-Once a device is fully charged, unplug it rather than leaving it connected longer than necessary.

Small habits can help reduce the risk of a battery fire at home.

Fire Prevention Week 2026

Fire Prevention Week is underway, and this year’s theme focuses on lithium-ion battery safety:

“Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life, powering phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, scooters, and more. When they’re damaged or charged improperly, they can create a serious fire risk.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing practical safety reminders and visiting local schools to talk about fire prevention and safe charging habits.

A few simple choices at home can make a big difference.

Today’s training carried a little more meaning.

Crews returned to Morris Farms this morning for agricultural rescue training at a location where our firefighters have trained in the past.

Following the recent farm accident there, Bruce shared how thankful he was that our crews were already familiar with the property and felt that previous training helped during his rescue.

Today, our crews were back on the farm continuing to work through rescue operations and the unique challenges agricultural incidents can present.

We’re grateful to Bruce and the Morris family for continuing to open their property to our crews, and even more grateful to know Bruce is continuing his recovery.
