🚒Meet Your Heroes🚑—Employee Spotlight📢: Firefighter/EMT-B—Wayne Henderson

This month, we are proud to shine the spotlight on Firefighter/EMT-B Wayne Henderson, a dedicated member of our department who brings not only skill and knowledge, but a wealth of life experience to the team.

Wayne has been serving with the department for three years, but his background in the field spans an impressive 25 years. That experience shows in the calm judgment and steady presence he brings to every call. His list of certifications speaks volumes about his commitment to the job, including Firefighter I & II, EMT-B, GEMA Extrication Technician, Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I, and Rescue Specialist.

When asked about his biggest contribution, Wayne humbly points to the experience and perspective he brings to the job—something that can’t be taught overnight. It’s that kind of wisdom that helps guide not only the work itself, but also those serving alongside him.

One of Wayne’s most inspiring accomplishments is his determination to keep learning and growing, no matter the stage of life. He proudly shared that he returned to school at age 50 to earn his EMT certification, and at 51, is continuing his education by working toward becoming a paramedic. As he puts it, “it ain’t as easy as it used to be…lol,” but that hasn’t slowed him down one bit.

What Wayne enjoys most about the department is the close-knit family atmosphere. He values being part of a team where everyone supports one another, and he takes pride in continuing to serve in what he calls “a young man’s job,” proving that dedication and heart matter more than age.

Some of his favorite memories come from the simple, meaningful moments—like when the entire shift gathers to share a meal together, especially during Christmas and Thanksgiving. Those moments of connection help strengthen the bond that makes the department feel like family.

Looking ahead, Wayne hopes to continue serving both his community and the Lord to the best of his ability, with the goal of one day advancing into an officer position within the department.

Outside of work, Wayne enjoys a wide range of hobbies that reflect his adventurous spirit. He loves flying planes, sailing, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. In fact, one of his most unique talents is being able to fly a plane for hours without a motor—a skill that certainly sparks curiosity! And if you’ve spent any time around him, you likely already know about another one of his gifts—his ability to make people laugh.

Wayne has been happily married to his wife, Annette, for 31 years, and together they’ve built a beautiful family. He is a proud father to three daughters—Amanda, Aimee, and Ashleigh—and a grandfather to two grandsons, Andrew and James.

Wayne Henderson truly represents dedication, perseverance, and heart. We’re thankful to have him as part of our department family and appreciate the continued service he gives to our community. Thank you for your service, Wayne!

Graduation day is upon us, and with it comes a deep sense of pride as we recognize the accomplishments of our Heard County High School graduates. This milestone marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and growth—and it’s a proud moment not only for our students and their families but for the entire community.

To the graduating Class of 2026, we offer our sincere congratulations. You’ve shown commitment, perseverance, and strength throughout your academic journey. Whether you're heading to college, joining the workforce, or embarking on a new path, know that your community is cheering you on every step of the way.

As we join together to celebrate this exciting time, we want to remind everyone that safety is just as important as the celebration itself. Graduation night often brings increased traffic and activity, so please take extra precautions to ensure everyone gets home safely.

A few simple safety tips to remember:

1.) Be Alert: Pay attention to your environment during events and celebrations. If you notice anything unusual, don’t hesitate to notify authorities.
2.) Think Ahead: Arrange your travel plans in advance. If you’re driving, watch for heavy traffic around graduation venues and use extra care in parking areas where foot traffic will be high.
3.) Celebrate Wisely: Have fun, but do so responsibly. Be respectful of others and avoid behavior that could put yourself or anyone else in harm’s way.

Let’s come together as a community to recognize our graduates and celebrate responsibly. Together, we can help make this milestone safe, meaningful, and unforgettable.

Congratulations again to the Class of 2026—your future is bright, and we’re proud to be part of the community supporting you!

Heard County Fire & Emergency Services will join more than 100 fire departments across Georgia to help “Give Burns the Boot” during their upcoming annual boot drive benefiting the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation.

Weather permitting, firefighters from Heard County Fire & Emergency Services will be collecting donations on May 15, 16, and 25, 2026, on the square in downtown Franklin, Georgia, for the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation’s 36th annual “Give Burns the Boot” drive.

The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation was founded in 1982 by a group of DeKalb County firefighters. Over the years, the GFBF has grown to incorporate the entire state and has expanded its work to include all Georgians. In 1990, the “Give Burns the Boot” campaign was started to support the GFBF’s efforts. Since that time, firefighters across the state have continued their support by collecting more than $14.5 million.

Proceeds raised during the “Give Burns the Boot” drive help the GFBF fulfill its mission to educate the public in burn awareness and prevention, support medical facilities in the care of burns in Georgia, and assist burn survivors in their recovery.

The Foundation fulfills its mission through several different programs, including the Chesney Fallen Firefighters Memorial Grant Program, named in memory of the Gwinnett County firefighter who died in the line of duty. The program provides funding to fire departments’ fire safety and burn prevention programs.

The Foundation also works closely with both the Burn Center at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta. Each center receives grant funding each year. This funding helps these facilities acquire equipment and send personnel to conferences on burn care treatment and rehabilitation.

Money raised by Heard County Fire & Emergency Services also goes to Camp Oo-U-La, Georgia’s only camp held exclusively for burn-injured children. Last year, the camp celebrated and welcomed numerous campers. Campers experience an entire week where they get to feel like kids again, regardless of their physical features. The cost for both campers and volunteers is covered entirely by the GFBF. Eligible campers are Georgia residents ages 7 to 17 who sustained a burn injury that required treatment or hospitalization at a burn center, or non-Georgia residents who were treated in a Georgia burn center, along with their siblings. Over the past several years, Camp Oo-U-La programs have served more than 2,000 children.

To help keep the fire fatality and burn injury rate down, the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation and Heard County Fire & Emergency Services, along with Fire Chief Jim Short, need your help. When you see a firefighter on the square in downtown Franklin, Georgia, on May 15, 16, and 25, 2026, please donate. No matter how big or small the donation, the life you may help save could be your very own.

DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE DUE TO WEATHER AND/OR CALL VOLUME.

Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 3-May 9, 2026)
Friday, May 8 — Use Caution After Storms

A key part of hurricane preparedness is understanding the dangers that remain well after a storm. This is NOT the time to put your guard down. Nearly half of hurricane fatalities occur after the storm.
