District 9 friends, today is Election Day, May 5.
Question:
What do you do when there is no candidate on the ballot who actually represents you?
Many of us were raised to believe voting is a civic duty, no matter what. But in Williamson County, and especially here in District 9, we often face ballots that do not reflect our values or give us a real choice.
So most people do what feels responsible.
They vote for the “lesser of two evils” just to make sure their voice is counted, even if they feel torn while casting those votes.
But here is the problem: That approach may be keeping things exactly the same.
Why do I say that?
Well, we are all aware that the political landscape has changed quite a bit over the past few decades. Systems are now built for long term strategy, not short term reactions. When we vote out of fear or compromise instead of alignment, we unintentionally reinforce or strengthen outcomes we do not actually want.
The way the current system is configured, voting is not just about today. It is also DATA. Your vote tells parties and future candidates who exists, what they believe, and where support actually lives.
If you consistently vote for a party you do not align with, even out of conscience or duty, you become invisible to the very people who could represent you in the future.
And if they cannot see you, they cannot build for you and they cannot represent your beliefs.
That is where the long game comes in.
Even when it feels uncomfortable, one strategy is to vote in alignment with your actual values and beliefs, not just the options in front of you today. That is how a base is identified, measured, and eventually built. That is how stronger candidates show up in future elections. Your choice of ballot today is what will encourage future candidates that they have the support to make a difference when they run. They will know they have a chance to win as your representative.
Nothing changes if you make yourself invisible to likeminded people by pulling a ballot that isn’t truly in keeping with your values. That’s how the game has really changed.
This election is not only about today or the next few years. It is bigger than that because your vote shapes the future of District 9 and Williamson County over time.
This is something I didn’t fully understand until I decided to run.
I know this can feel like a challenging shift in thinking for some. It was for me, too. But it’s an important one.
If you are open to it, I would genuinely like to hear your thoughts. Have you ever felt like your ballot did not reflect you? Did you feel caught, frustrated when you didn’t have a voting choice that felt right? What did you do?
I will also be sharing opportunities soon for in-person conversations around this. These are important discussions, and they start at the community level.

The ballot you pull matters, but perhaps in different ways than we’ve been told previously. Thank you for showing up to the polls today.
