๐Ÿš‘ Volunteer EMS in New Jersey needs your support

NJ Senate Bill S1421 is scheduled to be heard by the Senate Law & Public Safety Committee, and while the bill aims to make Basic Life Support ambulance coverage an essential service, it currently raises serious concerns for volunteer EMS agencies across the state.

Volunteer ambulance squads have been serving New Jersey communities for generations โ€” answering emergency calls, staffing ambulances, training for hundreds of hours, and providing life-saving care to our neighbors. In 2025 alone, volunteer squads answered more than 180,000 calls statewide.

However, as written, this bill may not clearly recognize many volunteer EMS agencies as authorized providers and could create staffing requirements that many volunteer squads cannot realistically meet.

Without important amendments, communities could face longer response times, reduced EMS coverage, greater strain on neighboring systems, and higher costs to taxpayers.

Ramsey Ambulance Corps supports efforts to strengthen emergency medical services in New Jersey โ€” but volunteer EMS must be protected, recognized, and included in the process.
