A Florida man sought by Oakland police was tracked down and captured near the home of a domestic violence victim after he slammed his pickup truck into a utility pole โ strewing wires across the road โ and fled on foot, authorities said.
Officer James Velardo, responding to a call of multiple vehicles being damaged in a West Oakland Avenue parking lot, tried to stop Dylan D. Keirs, 34, of Okeechobee, but he sped off north on Ramapo Valley Road shortly before 11:30 p.m. yesterday (Thurs., Aug. 6th), Acting Oakland Police Capt. Michael Griffin said.
โAfter the vehicle traveled through a red traffic signal near Courthouse Place, a supervising officer directed that the pursuit be discontinued, and the pursuing officer complied,โ Griffin said.
Police found the downed pole, the 2012 Dodge pickup and drugs near Navajo Way a short time later, the captain said.
Officers from Oakland, Mahwah and Ramsey, along with a Bergen County Sheriffโs Office K-9 unit, converged on the area and established a perimeter but couldnโt find Keirs, he said.
A manhunt continued for several hours before police found Keirs driving a stolen pickup shortly before 7:30 a.m. today, Griffin said.
Keirs was charged criminally with criminal mischief, eluding, hindering apprehension, burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of both drugs and drug paraphernalia.
He was also issued 22 motor vehicle summonses and was expected to be charged in connection with a domestic violence incident, the details of which will remain private.
The crash closed Ramapo Valley Road between Sioux Avenue and Navajo Way while the vehicle was towed, repairs were made and an investigation continued.
