This afternoon, the Street Department responded to a downed tree branch on N. Clay Street between Clinton Street and Washington Street. Fortunately, what could have been just another cleanup call turned into a pretty special stop.

After getting the street reopened, the crew had the opportunity to stop by a neighborhood lemonade stand and enjoy some cold refreshments on a warm day.

The kids also got the opportunity to climb into one of our loaders, check out the cab, and learn a little about how the equipment works.

Thank you for the refreshments and hospitality. It’s always great to see kids outside having fun and showing a little entrepreneurial spirit. Days like this are a reminder of what makes Frankfort such a great community. 🍋🚜❤️

👷 June Street Department Employee Spotlight 🎉

Each month, we take time to recognize the employees who help keep the City of Frankfort moving. This month, we’re celebrating three team members who not only have June birthdays, but who each bring something special to our department every single day.

🎂 Richard Knutson
📅 Birthday: June 9
🔧 1 Month of Service (since May 2026)

Richard joined the department on May 4th and has already proven to be a tremendous addition to our team. From day one, he has shown up with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to tackle whatever task is put in front of him.

Richard approaches every day ready to learn and contribute, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. He begins CDL training this month and is expected to earn his license by mid July. There is no doubt in our minds that Richard has a bright future ahead of him and will develop into an excellent operator for the department in the years to come.

🎂 Mark Carr
📅 Birthday: June 16
🔧 33 Years of Service (since 1993)

Mark has been serving the City of Frankfort for more than three decades. Over the years, he has done just about everything the department has to offer. While he spent many years at the Recycling Center, his experience and knowledge eventually brought him back into the equipment division where he continues to be a valuable member of the team today.

Before joining the City, Mark proudly served in the United States Navy from 1986 to 1990. His dedication to service has continued throughout his career with the Street Department.

Beyond his experience, Mark is known for his sense of humor and ability to keep people laughing. He’s always good for a joke or a helping hand when someone needs it. We’re grateful for his years of service and the positive attitude he brings to work every day.

🎂 Roger Acevedo
📅 Birthday: June 17
🔧 13 Years of Service (since 2013)

Roger began working with the department as a part-time employee in September 2013 before joining the team full-time in August 2016. Since then, he has become one of our most dependable and skilled operators.

Whether he’s behind the controls of a piece of equipment, helping train others, or stepping into a leadership role, Roger consistently leads by example. Over the past winter months, he has also served as Acting Foreman, helping oversee daily operations and ensuring projects continued moving forward.

What stands out most about Roger is his willingness to do whatever is needed to help the team succeed. He takes pride in his work, can be counted on in any situation, and brings a level of professionalism and experience that makes those around him better. Roger is a tremendous asset to the department, and we’re fortunate to have him on our team.

Thank you, Richard, Mark, and Roger, for everything you do to serve the City of Frankfort and our residents each and every day. We appreciate your hard work, dedication, and commitment to the department.

Please join us in wishing Richard, Mark, and Roger a very Happy Birthday! 🎉🎂💪

Keeping with our birthday shoutouts and continuing to highlight the team members who show up every day to serve our community, here are our May recognitions at the Street Department!

———-

Jordan Campbell
📅 May 8
🎉 2 Years of Service (since 2024)

Jordan is a laborer within the department and has quickly become someone we can rely on day in and day out. He regularly operates our side load garbage trucks each week and is always willing to jump in and help wherever needed. Whether it’s handling routes, assisting the crew, or taking on something new, Jordan shows up ready to work.

What really stands out is his attitude. He brings a positive mindset to the job every single day, works well with the team, and takes pride in what he does. That kind of consistency and willingness to step up does not go unnoticed. We appreciate everything you do, Jordan—keep it up!

Kaden Harrison
📅 May 23
🎉 2 Weeks of Service

Kaden is our newest laborer, and we’re excited to have him on board. A 2025 graduate of Clinton Prairie, Kaden comes to us with a strong work ethic and a great foundation, graduating with honors.

He’s already hitting the ground running and is scheduled to attend CDL training starting May 18th. Once completed, he’ll be stepping into driving our side load garbage trucks and assisting with daily operations across the department.

Kaden has already shown a willingness to learn and be part of the team, and that goes a long way in this line of work. We’re looking forward to watching him grow, develop his skills, and build a long career here with the City of Frankfort.

Thank you both for your hard work and dedication. We’re proud to have you on the team! 💪

Please join us in wishing Jordan and Kaden a happy birthday!🎈

🚧 Alley Approach Reconstruction – What This Work Looks Like 🚧

We wanted to take a moment to show residents what goes into reconstructing an alley approach and why this work is so important.

The location shown here is an alley off E Wabash St (running north/south across from Fire Station Headquarters on S Clay St). This particular approach had deteriorated all the way down to the original brick base. When it rained, water had nowhere to go, resulting in significant pooling and poor drainage.

What we’re doing:
• Full excavation and removal of failed material
• Rebuilding the base properly
• Grading the approach to ensure water drains as intended

The end goal is simple: eliminate standing water and improve long-term durability.

This was one of the worst locations we’ve encountered—but there are many others across the city that need attention.

👉 Our goal is to reconstruct at least 100 alley approaches by the end of summer. If we can exceed that, we absolutely will.

🛠️ Alley Season Update

Full alley work will officially begin Monday, April 27th.

• We plan to hit all alleys twice this year (pending weather and equipment)
• We are starting earlier than in previous years
• We will be adding as much stone as our budget allows

We are also tracking where stone is placed this year, so we can better manage coverage across the city moving forward. Unfortunately, it is not possible to re-stone every alley in one season—but we are committed to making steady, citywide improvements.

🙏 A Quick Note to Residents

We understand there are many alleys that need work—and we are aware of problem areas throughout the city. Our crews will be working diligently on all sides of town.

We ask for your patience and trust as we work through this process.

If you see our crews out, please slow down and drive safely—their safety matters.

We appreciate your support as we continue improving our streets and alleys. 👍

Today we’re celebrating a big milestone in the Street Department—25 years of service for Jerry Leonard!

For most of those years, Jerry has been out there doing the work we all know and respect—putting in the time, effort, and hard work it takes to keep our city moving. About 8 years ago, he stepped up to take over our recycling program and did everything he could to keep it going strong.

These days, Jerry has taken on the role at the guard shack, and if you’ve stopped by the Street Department, chances are he’s the first person you see. Whether it’s a wave, or a quick conversation, Jerry makes sure everyone is welcomed the right way. It may seem like a small thing, but it goes a long way and it speaks to the kind of person he is.

Jerry is a proud veteran, a family man, and someone who always brings a little humor to the job—which, as we all know, goes a long way in this line of work.

25 years of dedication, adaptability, and commitment to the City of Frankfort is something to be proud of. We’re lucky to have him on our team, and I’m personally grateful for everything he’s done for this department over the years.

Please join me in congratulating Jerry Leonard on 25 years of service!

Today is Administrative Professionals Day, and I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t take a moment to recognize the absolute backbone of our department—Kristina Martinez.

Kristina handles everything from payroll and budgets to all the “hey can you help with this real quick” moments that somehow turn into 10 more things. She keeps everything organized, moving, and running smoothly behind the scenes… and truthfully, probably saves me on a daily basis.

When I stepped into this role, her support and guidance made all the difference. She didn’t just help me learn the job—she probably prevented a few disasters along the way (and continues to do so 😄).

I joke all the time that she’s the one who really runs the department. I just get to stand in front of people and talk about it, and honestly, there’s a lot of truth to that. Without her, I’d probably be in trouble by now!

In all seriousness, we are incredibly lucky to have her. She’s the glue that holds everything together, and I can’t thank her enough for everything she does for me, our team, and the City of Frankfort.

Kristina—we appreciate you more than you know!

✅ N Williams St is OPEN ✅

After a few long days of work and some weather delays, N Williams St is officially back open!

The inactive railroad tracks have been fully removed and the roadway has been resurfaced, creating a much smoother and safer drive through that area.

A big thank you to Crenshaw Paving for their work laying the new asphalt.

We appreciate everyone’s patience during the closure as we continue improving our city streets! 🚧
