The band students at Hilda Walker Intermediate School performed their annual Spring Band Concert in May. This concert featured the Beginning Band led by Mr. Ed Fitzgerald, and the Wildcat Band and the Jazz Band both directed by Mr. Jason Collins. The students enjoyed demonstrating all that they had learned in band this year! 🐾🎵🖤

In addition, each director announced their Band Booster Scholarship Award winners. The Wildcat Band awardees were Jessica Delos Reyes, Aubree Grant, and Erin Jacobson. The Beginning Band awardees were Ariana Donovan, Karolina Lukaszczyk, and Andres Villa. Mr. Collins and Mr. Fitzgerald also bid farewell to their sixth-grade band students as they move on to continue their band journey with Ms. Coughlin at Summit Hill Junior High in the fall. 💚🎵🖤

Congratulations to Kevin Brown on winning our 2026 Community Contributor Award! Each year, our Board of Education honors a community member whose service to the district has gone above and beyond and impacted our schools, students, and staff.

“Mr. Brown has been a steadfast volunteer and collaborator within our district’s music programs for many years, and his tireless dedication has left an indelible mark on our school community. From designing and building sets for our musical productions to stepping up for any need that arises, Kevin has always been someone we know we can depend on. Even after his own children were no longer at Hilda Walker, he continued volunteering his time and talent to support their musical productions, demonstrating that his generosity is rooted in a genuine desire to serve and strengthen our school community. His contributions reflect the very best of our community, and we are profoundly grateful for everything he has done.”

Congratulations to Hilda Walker Intermediate School Sixth Grade Science Teacher Mary Dempsey on winning a May Summit Award! Our Board of Education proudly presents monthly Summit Awards (September through May) to recognize those who give a little extra to make SHSD161 the very best school district for each and every student. Ms. Dempsey has worked in our district for 25 years, all of them at Walker, and was nominated by a parent for going above and beyond for her student.

"Mary’s dedication and work ethic are remarkable, and they set the tone for the care and professionalism she brings to her students each day. She is exceptionally patient and always willing to support a student in need, but one of her greatest gifts is her ability to connect with students through humor. She has mastered the nuanced art of using sarcasm in a way that makes students laugh and feel included, never embarrassed or hurt. That balance is incredibly rare. Students often say, “She’s low-key hilarious” – and in sixth grade, that compliment speaks volumes!”
