June is CMV Awareness Month. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is everywhere. More than half of U.S. adults have had it by age 40, and a Louisville-area study found that 62% of women of childbearing age already carry the virus - yet most Kentuckians have never heard of it.

When a baby is infected before birth, it's called congenital CMV (cCMV), and it's the most common infection passed from mom to baby during pregnancy. About 1 in every 200 babies is born with cCMV. In Kentucky, that's roughly 260 babies every year.

Here's why it matters to us: CMV is the #1 non-genetic cause of childhood hearing loss. Hearing loss caused by CMV can develop or worsen over time, even in children who pass their newborn hearing screening.

Yet 91% of women have never heard of CMV.

A common virus. Almost no awareness.

Did you know unaddressed hearing loss is one of the leading modifiable risk factors for dementia?

More so than smoking, high blood pressure, or obesity.

Yet most older adults wait 7 to 10 years before seeking help — or never do at all. In the meantime, untreated hearing loss contributes to:
🔹 Social isolation & depression
🔹 Increased risk of falls
🔹 Cognitive decline
🔹 Higher rates of hospitalization

The good news? Treatment helps. Addressing hearing loss promotes healthy aging, stronger connections, and independence.

KCDHH is here to help older Kentuckians and their families navigate hearing loss, access technology, and stay connected to their communities.
