As Governor Andy Beshear gears up for a potential Presidential bid, his super PAC has been accepting large donations. One large donation came from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (or IBEW). In fact, they donated over $200,000. The IBEW is a proponent of hyperscale data centers. This is because of the jobs they bring to electricians. Last year, they urged their 900,000 members to ask their representatives to oppose any bill that would ban data center construction. The union pointed to the economic growth and jobs that data centers bring, but this desire for growth must be balanced with other concerns—utility rates increases, noise, and impact on rural communities. In either case, the donation to Beshear’s PAC will temper his position on data centers.

A hyperscale data center is one step closer to moving into Hancock County. Last week, the Kentucky Public Service Commission approved the electricity contract for the TeraWulf data canter. The electricity will be provided by Big Rivers Electric Corporation and, according to the commission, the agreement provides “adequate protections” for ratepayers. Locals have been concerned that a data center will increase the price of electricity, but in the case of Hancock County, the agreement ensures “fair, just, and reasonable” rates. Some residents are still skeptical. Others are optimistic as TeraWulf promises to bring revenue and jobs to their region. The data center will take over an abandoned aluminum smelter site and is expected to create at least 90 jobs.

The Kentucky Attorney General’s Office has received over $1.5 million in grants from the federal government. The money was awarded by the Trump Administration’s Department of Justice and the purpose was to crack down on drug trafficking, human trafficking, health care fraud, and immigration control. The money will be used to hire attorneys who’ll serve as special assistants that will be involved with legal prosecutions. Some argue the grants suggest strong political bias on the part of the AG. But Coleman’s job is to enforce the laws that are already on the books. The money allows his office to do that job more effectively and to put dangerous criminals behind bars—something that law-abiding Kentuckians should favor.

Laken Snelling, a former UK cheerleader, has pleaded guilty in the death of her infant son. Snelling told the judge, “Instead of helping him, I ended his life.” She said the baby came unexpectedly and that she was experiencing “a lot of emotional distress.” The case is a tragedy. But had Snelling ended her son’s life in the womb via chemical abortion or by travelling to an out-of-state abortion clinic, her actions would have been protected by out of state jurisdictions. The question we’re faced with is over the humanity of a child—whether it’s in or out of the womb. As it is, some allow abortion up to birth. Snelling was indicted for manslaughter and prosecutors recommend a 13-year sentence.

Attorney General Russell Coleman is suing Facebook, and a Kentucky mother is watching closely. Shannon Heacock of Glasgow is urging Meta—Facebook’s parent company—to protect teens from real harms. The warning comes in light of her late-son’s su***de last year after he was a victim of online exploitation. Someone blackmailed her son and threatened to release AI-generated images of him online. Attorney General Coleman argues that Meta used harmful features to drive children and teens to compulsively use the platform. Even though Meta knew of the harms, they publicly insisted they were safe. This is why they’re being sued. Heacock traveled to California to attend the trial and her son’s case is a tragic reminder that the social media realm has a dark side.
