Can EPPs take anything from common class-wide reading selections for this year's college freshmen?

Social justice. Climate change. Racial inequality. Immigration. Hunger. While those topics might read like a laundry list of some of the world’s biggest problems, they are just a few of the issues covered in books that are required reading for freshmen at colleges across the country.

Chris Barbic's reflection on stepping down from his position in Tennessee's Achievement School District provides food for thought on school leadership, the importance of committed and talented educators, the impact of political and social contexts, and the toll exacted by implementing change in the real world of neghborhood schools.

Editor’s note: Chris Barbic announced today his decision to step down as the head of Tennessee’s Achievement School District, a position he has held since 2011. Under his leadership, the Achievement School District has shown great promise, as described in two Fordham Institute reports by Nelson Smit…

Town hall meetings are scheduled in Pikeville, Frankfort, Somerset, Murray and Highland Heights beginning Wednesday.

The public meetings will be held from 6-8 p.m. at these locations:
■ Wednesday, July 15: University of Pikeville, Community Technology Center, Room 125, Pikeville.
■ Thursday, July 16: Student Center Ballroom, 4th floor, Kentucky State University, Frankfort.
■ Monday, July 20: Harold Rogers Student Commons, Community Room, Somerset Community College, Somerset.

Important information for faculty and candidates alike: "Teachers who continue to believe that 'your basic intelligence can't change' – despite evidence to the contrary – may rob students of opportunities to learn and grow. Computer science and math instructors who endorse such beliefs, for instance, report being more likely to advise struggling undergraduates to drop their classes."
