The mine rescue competition is more than a test of skill. It's a chance for miners to train in realistic emergency scenarios that could save lives on the job.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the Kentucky Division of Mine Safety help design challenges that closely mirror real-world hazards such as toxic gases, roof falls, and mine collapses. The event serves as both hands-on training and a celebration of the mining industry's ongoing commitment to keeping workers safe.

The 2026 Kentucky Mining Institute (KMI) Mine Rescue Contest took place May 31st – June 4th at the Central Bank Center in Lexington, KY, bringing together 25 of the best mine rescue teams and safety professionals in the nation. Here's a great video of the event.

Prescribed burn season is over, but here's a boots-on-the-ground look at the how and why Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves does this work to protect and preserve our native plants and grasses.

Sec. John Lyons attend this event today and we couldn't be prouder of the partnerships that have made this happen!
In total, $11.5 million dollars went to support infrastructure and the land.

From roadways into the community, utilities and more, these dollars are helping make Chestnut Ridge a home for flood survivors. Gov. Beshear and all of us at Team Kentucky have kept our promise to be there until every life and structure is rebuilt.
We now have eight high-ground communities!

🎉 Just one more day until we celebrate Chestnut Ridge! 🏡

We hope you’ll join us tomorrow, Friday, June 5, as we celebrate the progress, partnership, and community spirit behind the Chestnut Ridge development.

This special event is a chance to come together and recognize what’s possible when people, organizations, and communities work side by side to create more opportunities for families in Eastern Kentucky. We’re proud of the momentum building at Chestnut Ridge and excited to share this milestone with all of you.

Whether you’ve supported this project, partnered with us along the way, or simply care about the future of our region, we’d love to have you there!

This 9,600 sqft center will serve as an emergency operations center, 911 call center and a fire department for Elliott County residents.

It will also serve as a warming center and shelter during time of need for residents. First responders will utilize it as a classroom for continuing education. Currently, Elliott County has no emergency operations center and the old fire department building is in need of costly repairs.

This is a great investment in the county's residents!
