Kentuckians braved the rain today with our Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves joined partners from Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, for a Monarch butterfly tagging event as they make their way to Mexico. We were also joined by the Louisville Zoo.

Participants got an up-close look at monarchs while learning how tagging helps researchers better understand their migration and the challenges these remarkable travelers face along the way.

Events like this connect people with Kentucky’s natural world while contributing to the larger effort to understand and conserve monarch butterflies and the habitats they depend on.

Thanks to our partners and everyone who came out to learn, explore and lend a hand - and brave the rain. The sun came out, we found butterflies and learned a lot from field experts! 🦋🌿

In the field, anything can happen. You or a co-worker could fall in the wilderness with no immediate help for miles. Whether it's taking care of each other or our fellow Kentuckians in an emergency, our Kentucky Division of Forestry received Wilderness First Aid training today from an initiative, and first of its kind, from the Office of Administrative Services so they can be prepared when they are miles from medical help.

🔥 What difference can a prescribed fire make? Take a look.

A picture is worth more than a thousand words here. These photos show the same Kentucky landscape before and after a prescribed burn, part of a statewide effort by the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves (OKNP) to track how fire affects rare species and high-quality natural communities.

🌱 After: Aug. 20, 2025

Since 2024, OKNP has established 109 photo monitoring points at 17 sites across Kentucky, representing 11 high-quality natural communities.

By returning to the same locations and taking photos before and after prescribed burns, scientists can see how vegetation responds, track changes over time and use that information to guide future conservation work.

Sometimes, the best way to understand what’s changing on the landscape is simply to see it. 🔥🌿

🏠 A new home. Lower energy bills. And a Kentucky family moving in the very next day.

Our Office of Energy Policy director Kenya Stump and others in EEC recently joined partners to celebrate a new manufactured home featuring integrated solar shingles designed to offset 80–100% of monthly utility costs. ☀️

The project can offer Kentuckians an affordable, high-quality and energy-efficient path to homeownership.

And the best part? A family moved into the new home the day after the ribbon cutting. 💚
