One of Lake Michigan’s most incredible sights, the Point Betsie Lighthouse in Michigan is a bright, beautiful landmark just north of Frankfort, where its white brick tower, red roof, and black lantern stand right along the shoreline. Built in 1858, the lighthouse helped guide ships through the important Manitou Passage, a busy Lake Michigan route between the mainland and the islands. Its 37-foot Cream City brick tower was fitted with a fourth-order Fresnel lens, and that original lens is now on display for visitors to see up close. The site still includes the 1858 keeper’s residence, the fog signal building, and the Boathouse Museum, where you can learn about Lake Michigan rescues and lighthouse life. A cement collar with metal ribs was added in 1947 to help shield the lighthouse from high water and storm damage. Today, visitors can tour the restored keeper’s quarters, climb the 34-step tower for wide lake views, walk the pebble-filled beach, and stay for some of the most beautiful sunsets on Michigan’s west coast. The water often glows clear blue and turquoise here, making Point Betsie one of the most photographed lighthouse spots on the Great Lakes.
