โ๏ธ Winter Storm Fern โ Safety Reminder โ๏ธ
Winter Storm 'Fern' is expected to impact the Commonwealth from Friday through Sunday, bringing snow, ice, and dangerous conditions. Winter weather increases risk to our personnel, families, and equipment, and now is the time to prepare.
There is still time to take proactive steps to reduce cold-weather injuries, vehicle accidents, and property damage.
๐ Home & Family Safety
Use space heaters safelyโkeep at least 3 feet from combustible materials and never leave them unattended.
Never use grills or generators indoorsโcarbon monoxide kills.
Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
Prepare for power outages: flashlights, batteries, medications, and a family communication plan.
๐ Travel & Vehicle Safety
Avoid unnecessary travel during snow, ice, or freezing rain.
Slow down and increase following distanceโbridges and overpasses freeze first.
Ensure vehicles are winter-ready: proper tire tread, full fuel tank, winter-rated windshield fluid, and working lights and brakes.
Carry a winter emergency kit: blankets, flashlight, water, non-perishable food, phone charger, jumper cables, and ice scraper.
(For those traveling to IDT) Notify your chain of command if weather conditions impact your ability to safely report.
๐ฅถ Cold Weather Injury Prevention
Dress in layers; protect hands, feet, face, and ears.
Watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
Take warming breaks during prolonged outdoor exposure.
Stay hydrated and maintain proper nutrition.
โ ๏ธ On-Duty & Equipment Safety
Leaders will assess weather impacts and adjust training and movement as necessary.
Secure equipment, aircraft, and facilities against snow and ice accumulation.
Report hazardous conditions immediately through your chain of command.
Safety is a force multiplier. Mission success depends on every Guardsman returning home safely.
Use sound judgment, follow risk management principles, and look out for one another.
Protect the Force. Protect the Mission.
