As many enjoyed Frankenmuth Auto Fest in Heritage Park this weekend, 40 years ago was a different story.

Sept. 10 to 12, 1986, rains deluged the Great Lakes Bay region and caused record flooding of the regions rivers and towns, including Frankenmuth. Estimates were it was a 500 year flood event with 8 to 10 inches of rain falling just on one of those three days. Many emergency 1st responders left their families for flood duty and didn't return home until days later, responding to community needs. FFD responders and citizens battled rising flood waters and supplemented pump stations, filled and stacked sand bags on top of the downtown levee, and watched and prayed it would hold back the rising and record setting water.

Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, 2001, for some it still feels like yesterday.

We remember the 343 firefighters who entered the towers knowing the danger, yet choosing to climb the stairs while others were trying to escape. We remember the police officers, EMS, and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice that day. We remember the thousands of innocent lives lost and the families who have carried that loss for twenty-five years.

Today, we honor their courage, their sacrifice, and their brotherhood. We carry their memory forward in every call, every training, and every time we place our gear on and prepare to serve our community.

We also remember the feeling of everyone coming together in the hours, days, and months after the attack. We remember what it means to be an American and to care about our neighbors.
