Today (Saturday, June 20) the Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site is offering free admission for visitors. If you wish for a guided tour, please call in advance, as some tours may sell out fast. Walk-ins will be accommodated if space allows.

Happy Juneteenth! June 19th is recognized as Freedom Day and signifies the day when the last enslaved Africans were made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation, two years after it was signed. There are many ways in which Juneteenth has and is celebrated around the country, a day which only became a federal holiday in 2021. To learn more about Juneteenth, check out resources through the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Our next free admission day will be in honor of Juneteenth, which we will recognize on Saturday, June 20. Guided tours will be available at 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 2 PM, and 3:30 PM. Spots for these tours can only be reserved by calling the site at 765.847.1691.

Tour spots are first-come-first served. We highly recommend making a reservation in advance of June 20! Walk-ins will be accommodated if space allows.

It is time for another Wayne County Collects post, and this week's them is . In this picture of the Coffin home from 1920, you can see at one time the house did have a sign attached above the front entrance.

For a short period, the home was also a hotel for travelers going north and south along what today is U.S. Highway 27. At the time, the home was owned by Elva Pegg. It’s interesting how the Coffin home has a history as a stop for travelers, first for freedom seekers, and later for road weary travelers.
