On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas to announce what enslaved people had been denied for two and a half years: their freedom. That day, known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day, reminds us that true freedom requires knowledge, truth, and action.

SMFCSD joins communities across the nation in observing Juneteenth because knowing our history is the foundation of everything we teach.

Happy Juneteenth.

Borel Middle School student Jacob does not need a facilities report to tell him what he sees every day. Sharing similar stories from our school communities, windows that no longer let light in. Classrooms with no windows at all. Ceilings that leak when it rains. And buildings that have been standing since the 1950s.

Over the past several weeks, we have been sharing stories from students, teachers, and staff across our schools. From PE teacher Mr. Kotani at Brewer Island to student body president Jonas at Beresford to teachers like Ms. Kim Lorton at Highlands and Ms. Laura Kendall at Cottage Grove. Each of them has shared something real about what it looks and feels like to learn and work in spaces that have not kept pace with the needs of our students.

Clouded windows, rotting wood, crumbling concrete, and classrooms that have become a distraction rather than a place of focus. These are not isolated stories, they are a shared reality across our campuses, and they are exactly what the 2026 Facilities Master Plan was designed to address.
Now we are at an important moment.

On Thursday, June 25 at 5:30 PM, the Board of Trustees will consider placing a school improvement bond measure on the November ballot. You can attend in person at the District Office, 1170 Chess Drive, Foster City, or join via Zoom. Public comment will be open and every voice matters.

Cottage Grove Elementary teacher Laura Kendall has seen firsthand how much a learning environment shapes what happens inside it. When facilities are outdated with aging windows, worn surfaces, and spaces that have not kept up with the needs of modern learning, the building itself becomes a distraction.

This is not just one teacher's experience. It is a reality shared across our 22 schools, and our community has the power to change.

Cottage Grove Elementary, formerly Lead Elementary, student Anthony notices the difference between his classroom and the recently built MPR. He sees the new MPR on his campus and knows what a modern, well-designed space can look like. Then he walks into his classroom. Windows so clouded you can no longer see through them. Rotted wood on the walls. The contrast between what is new and what has been left behind is hard to miss, especially when you are a student walking those halls every day.

The recent 2026 Facilities Master Plan highlights the need across aging facilities. There is a similar story at all 22 of our school sites.

We welcome you to review the plan and see what needs there are at your school site: https://ow.ly/SMxS50Zc61i

Today, our students didn't just attend the SMFCSD Partners Luncheon — they led it.

From opening remarks to award presentations, every moment of today's program was led by the incredible young leaders of our Empowering Student Voices Council. They stood at the podium with confidence, honored our community partners with grace, and reminded every person in that room why we do this work every single day.

This is what student leadership looks like in SMFCSD.

Our students presented awards across every category, called up their peers to the podium, and carried the entire program from start to finish. We couldn't be prouder.

And to our incredible community partners, thank you. Your dedication to our students and schools makes moments like this possible. Together, we are going to achieve great things for San Mateo and Foster City students.

Beresford Elementary fifth grader and student body president Jonas loves his school, and the outdoor spaces show what is possible when a campus is well cared for. But when students head inside, the classrooms tell a different story. Spaces that have not been modernized in decades have not kept pace with the students learning in them.

Across many schools in our district, the need is similar. Faded windows, windowless classrooms, rust, decade-old cabinetry, and more.

The 2026 Facilities Master Plan outlines what it will take to change that, campus by campus, student by student.

AND THAT'S A WRAP on the 2025-2026 school year!

Today, we celebrated our final two eighth-grade promotion ceremonies at Bayside Academy and Bowditch Middle School. A perfect close to six incredible ceremonies across our district.

This year, our campuses have been places where seeds of curiosity, learning, belonging, and possibility took root. Today, we watched those seeds bloom in the faces of our graduates.

To every student walking across that stage, you are seen, you are celebrated, and no matter where your journey takes you next, this community will always be in your corner.

Go lead with purpose, achieve without fear, and know that there is always a place for you here.

Happy Last Day of School, SMFCSD. We'll see you in August — bright-eyed and ready for what comes next!

Four promotions and it continues tomorrow! Today we celebrated our incredible eighth graders at Abbott Middle School, Borel Middle School, Parkside Montessori, and North Shoreview Montessori!

Every ceremony was filled with reflection, joy, and words of inspiration spoken in the many voices and languages of our beautiful community.

To every single graduate: YOU are seen, YOU are celebrated, and no matter where your journey takes you, there will ALWAYS be a place for you here.

Go achieve everything you deserve. We are excited to see you shine!

More to come

Highlands Elementary teacher Ms. Kim Lorton knows what a well-prepared learning environment should look like, and she also knows when a building is falling short. While Highlands recently celebrated a new MPR, much of the campus still tells a different story. Windows so clouded that they no longer let in natural light. Cracked fencing, rotting walls, and chipping paint have weathered decades without updates.

These are not cosmetic concerns. They are the kind of conditions that quietly shape how students feel when they walk into school each morning.

She is not alone. Across SMFCSD's 22 schools, aging facilities tell a similar story. The 2026 Facilities Master Plan outlines what it will take to address these needs, campus by campus, student by student.
