Hey Foster City,
You may have seen posts about the Real Estate survey currently in progress and wondered what that actually means. I want to expand a bit on what it is, how it affects our city, and most importantly, where you can weigh in in a way that’s easy and actionable.
The City of Foster City is taking a close look at our local economy to understand what’s working, what’s missing, and how we can grow in a way that better supports our community. What they’re finding so far is that we have a strong foundation. Our residents have high incomes, strong education levels, and we have a solid job base. The challenge is that a large portion of that spending is happening outside of Foster City.
Many of us are heading to nearby cities for shopping, dining, and entertainment because we do not have enough variety and destination-style options here, especially when it comes to dining, nightlife, retail, and places to gather and spend time.
At the same time, businesses here are dealing with very real barriers like high rents and limited space, which make it difficult for new businesses to open and for existing ones to expand. On top of that, trends like online shopping and fewer people working in offices full-time are reducing foot traffic for local businesses.
The opportunity here is clear. We do not have a demand problem. We have a chance to better meet that demand locally by creating more destinations, experiences, and a stronger mix of businesses that keep people here.
The City is now moving into the next phase of this study, where it will begin identifying areas for future development and making decisions that will shape the local economy for years to come.
This is the moment for our community to speak up. The City is asking for input on where you shop and dine, what you feel is missing, what is working well, and what could be improved. If you are a business owner or a resident, your perspective matters.
If we want to see more of what we have been asking for in Foster City, this is the time to weigh in and be part of that conversation.
