🚑 EMS Week 2026 | Improving Outcomes, Together 🚑
This week, we recognize the EMTs, Advanced EMTs, and Paramedics who provide emergency medical care to our community every day. Whether responding to a life-threatening emergency, providing critical treatment before reaching the hospital, or simply offering reassurance during someone’s worst day, EMS professionals play a vital role in improving outcomes for the people we serve.
Here are some facts about EMS in Vernon Township:
• In 2025, VTFD responded to 1,995 total calls for service. Of those, 1,433 were EMS-related incidents, accounting for 72% of our total run volume.
• Medic 432 in McCordsville is currently our primary medic unit and is the busiest apparatus in VTFD’s fleet, responding on 1,273 calls in 2025 — nearly 64% of all incidents.
• Medic 431 in Fortville is currently cross-staffed with Engine 431. When Medic 432 is unavailable, Engine 431’s crew responds in Medic 431 to EMS calls.
• In 2025, VTFD experienced 418 overlapping incidents, meaning another emergency call came in while crews were already committed to a separate call. This occurred on 21% of our calls for service.
• VTFD is in the final stages of staffing Medic 431 full-time, with a goal of completing the transition by June 1. Expanding EMS staffing helps improve response capabilities and patient care throughout our township.
• On August 21, 2025, VTFD became the first agency in Hancock County and the sixth agency in the State of Indiana to begin carrying Whole Blood on an ambulance. Whole blood can be used to treat patients suffering from severe blood loss due to trauma, medical emergencies, and other critical incidents — bringing advanced lifesaving care directly to the patient before they arrive at the hospital.
• All primary VTFD apparatus are equipped with Advanced Life Support (ALS) capabilities.
• VTFD currently has:
* 16 Paramedics
* 9 Advanced EMTs
* 15 EMTs
Improving outcomes takes more than equipment and ambulances. It takes dedicated professionals, continuous training, strong partnerships, and the trust of the community we serve.
Thank you to all of our EMS providers for the professionalism, compassion, and commitment they demonstrate every day. We are proud of the care they provide and the difference they make in our community.
