The Fortuna Police Department would like to inform our community that we are implementing increased enforcement related to the use of electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) within city limits.

With the growing popularity of these devices, it is important to ensure that they are operated safely and in compliance with current California laws and local regulations. Our goal is to promote public safety, reduce collisions, and ensure that riders, pedestrians, and motorists can share the roadway responsibly.

* Rules regarding where they may be operated
* Safety requirements, including helmet use
* Important guidelines for riders of all ages

We ask parents and guardians to take time to discuss these rules with younger riders to help keep everyone safe.

⚠️ Enforcement efforts may include stops, warnings, and citations for violations. Our priority is education first, followed by enforcement when necessary.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of retired Sergeant Scott Hillman.

Sergeant Hillman dedicated 25 years of his life to law enforcement, proudly serving the community he called home. A graduate of Fortuna High School, Scott chose to protect and serve the very city that shaped him, an enduring testament to his commitment and character.

Throughout his career, he held numerous important roles, including Impact Weapons Instructor, Chemical Agents Instructor, Field Training Officer, and Sergeant. In every position, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and a passion for training and mentoring others.

Scott was known not only for his service, but for his kindness and spirit. There was never a day he didn’t try to lighten the mood with a good joke, bringing laughter and levity even during the most challenging times. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, leaving a lasting impression on his fellow officers and the community alike.

His legacy of service, integrity, and compassion will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him.

Rest easy, Sergeant Hillman. Thank you for your service.

Juvenile Arrested After Short Vehicle Pursuit and Found in Possession of a Concealed Firearm

On May 14, 2026 at approximately 1:43 AM, an Officer with the Fortuna Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a silver Mercedes sedan around the 2600 block of Kenmar Road for a vehicle code violation. The vehicle failed to yield to the officer’s signal and a short vehicle pursuit was initiated. The vehicle came to an abrupt stop, and the driver was safely taken into custody. Upon taking the male driver into custody, Officers removed a concealed handgun from his waistband. The driver was identified to be a 16-year-old male juvenile.

The juvenile driver was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Juvenile Hall for carrying a concealed weapon on his person, possessing a firearm with an altered, removed, or obliterated serial number, being a minor in possession of a handgun, vehicle evading, and being unlicensed.

The Fortuna Police Department remains committed to public safety and transparency.
