2025 Street Paving Project Update:
It has come to our attention that a few residents have expressed concerns about the quality of the work performed on Pickett Drive as part of our 2025/2026 Road Resurfacing Project.
The pavement on Pickett Drive consists of concrete that was previously overlaid with an asphalt surface. This project involved milling off the old asphalt overlay and replacing it with a new asphalt overlay. Since there is not a clean edge to pave against, the section where the asphalt meets the curb line may be somewhat uneven in some places. Additionally, a few sections of curbing were damaged during the milling process. This is not unusual and our contractor Reigler is aware of the situation.
This project is ongoing and Reigler will be working with our Public Works Department and our City Engineer to assess and to fix these areas in the near future.
Our long standing and very successful 5-Year Street Program covers maintenance of 97 roads, comprised of approximately 21 centerline miles, serving over 6,000 residents. These roads must be maintained at all times for safety and quality of life. To benefit the maximum number of residents as well as to maximize the number of streets done each year, we must maximize our spending each year which helps explain why different aproaches are taken at different times. And in some rare instances, aesthetics may be sacrificed in order to achieve this objective.
Resurfacing existing pavement is a very cost-effective solution for repairing the pavement surface, but it may not address 100% of the problems on the roadway in every case. Based on the expert opininon of our City Engineer, for roadways where resurfacing is not a viable option for whatever reason, we will do a full depth reconstruction project, which is typically 4 to 5 times higher in cost than a resurfacing project. For this year's street program, it was determined by our experts that asphalt overlays were the best overall option.
Rest assured that quality work that improves our community is a top priorty for these projects, to that end our Public Works Director and our City Engineer are regularly on site to review and inspect the work being performed. During a recent visit to the site the City Engineer indicated that the work is proceeding in accordance with our contract documents. Any project concerns/issues that are not immediately rectified by the Contractor are added to the project punch list and addressed before the project is accepted and final payments are made.
Please bear with us as we continue to work towards completion of another successful road project, your patience and support are appreciated by our team.
