Texas Wesleyan Veterans' Project

Texas Wesleyan Veterans' Project We are law students serving those who served our country. Our membership includes civilians and service-members alike.

TWVP is a service organization that provides pro bono legal services for active duty service members and veterans in Texas. While membership is not wholly dependent on offering pro bono service—it is strongly encouraged. Many of the organization that depend on TWVP to provide volunteers, exclusively solicit our organization because our members embody the heart, soul, respect, and legal ability to

provide outstanding service in the form of pro bono legal work. Our main goal is to provide community awareness regarding veterans' legal needs by fostering a widespread commitment by our members to provide pro bono legal services to veterans. We hope that TWVP's commitment to growing its member and pro bono volunteer base will generate a sincere interest, on the part of our student members, to continue to serve veterans on a pro bono basis when those students transition into practice. We do not take affirmative action to recruit or promote military service, per se, but we do help students, who directly approach TWVP with requests, with questions/concerns regarding GI Bill benefits, general veterans' benefits, and potential legal careers in the military.

My employer, Family Endeavors, is looking to retain an attorney or law firm as a contractor to provide legal assistance for its veteran clients. Family Endeavors is nonprofit funded by an SSVF (Department of Veterans Affairs) grant that assists veterans, who are at imminent risk of homelessness or literally homeless, with housing. We are looking for an attorney/law firm we can contract with beginning March 1st and who can start providing legal services by April 1st. It would be a quick turnaround, so they would also need to be available and flexible. Our clients have a variety of legal issues so we will need attorneys who are able to assist them with evictions, Social Security benefits, criminal matters, child support issues, etc... If you are interested in working with Family Endeavors to serve those who have served our country please email me at [email protected].

Join us at Noon on Wednesday, 4 Apr 12 in Room 216, where we will be broadcasting the ABA Labor and Employment Law Section's free webinar on how to help disabled veterans apply for Veterans Affairs benefits. There are so many veterans applying for assistance that the process takes an enormous amount of time. The average veteran waits four years to receive benefits because the process is so arduous and overwhelming.

TWVP is co-sponsoring a presentation of the webinar with LELA. It's a great opportunity to position yourself to help people in need and its another skill you can put on your resume. See the attached flyer for more information.

Food will be provided.
