Meet the Playwright, Cherie Williams! ✍️

Cherie Williams is a playwright, actor, director, theater educator, stage manager, makeup artist, and technician. A graduate of Fort Valley State University in Mass Communications, she began her professional theater career in Texas in 2007, working across multiple disciplines. Her original works have been featured in several festivals, including a one-woman show about Pearl Bailey entitled “At A Girl Pearl!” which was featured at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. And now Williams makes her Jubilee Theatre debut as a playwright with “I’ll Be Damned If”, inspired by the life of Carleen Gill. She thanks her family, friends, mentors, students, and fellow artists for always being her biggest supporters and cheerleaders. And she thanks Jubilee Theatre for giving her this incredible opportunity to feature her work and her talents.

Meet the Director, Calvin J. Walker 🎬

Calvin J. Walker is an award-winning playwright, director, and producer whose work explores the intersections of Black identity, masculinity, memory, and belonging. Blending incisive humor with emotional intimacy, his plays invite audiences into difficult conversations about the stories we inherit and the people we become.
Walker served as a Summer 2026 Artist in Residence at Arts Mission Oak Cliff and is the founder of Watchmen Media Productions, where his practice centers the development of new work and community-engaged storytelling. His plays include Bigger, Love is a Miracle, and Water From a Rock. Across his work, Walker examines vulnerability, self-worth, faith, family, and the cultural forces that shape Black life.
Whether writing for stage or screen, Walker is drawn to complicated Black lives, uncomfortable questions, and the spaces where humor and humanity collide. His work asks audiences not simply to witness, but to reckon, connect, and imagine new possibilities.

This weekend, Klook and Vinette took their final bow. What a phenomenal show!

To the cast, TJ and Brian: you both are so extremely special. So talented, determined, and authentic. The craft is better with you two in it. Both of brought this stage to life in such beautiful ways. Thank you for capturing audience week after week. Thank you for being Jubilee Family! ❤️

To the Director, Khira Hailey: Khira, you are one of one. Your style of directing, your grace, humor, and dedication made this show what it was. It is always a pleasure and privilege to have your insight and your hand touch a show. 🎬

To the Musical Director, Geno Young: This show wouldn’t have been the same without you. Your knowledge is invaluable. Your gift is incomparable. Your flow is unimaginable. Thank you for gracing Jubilee’s stage week after week and making each performance extraordinary. 🎹

To the Production Team: Every light, sound, splatter of paint, and so much more are NOT overlooked. Each lightbulb that flickered during tense moments. The dynamic set design that moved through time and location. The props and sounds that wrapped it all together are priceless. Jubilee would not be what it is without any of you! 🎨

We are officially kicking off NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY! 🤩

The countdown is on —“I’ll Be Damned If..” is hitting the stage in 5 WEEKS! ✨

Mark your calendars for this historic, world premiere telling the story of the living legend, Carlean Gill! Carlean is a young girl from Detroit’s 8 Mile who dreams of a life beyond her neighborhood. She finds an exciting journey with the famed Arthur Bragg’s Idlewild R***e. As she joins the show as one of its glamorous Fiesta Dolls, she discovers her talents, finds her voice, and falls in love. From her love, she grows more and finds the strength to overcome obstacles and challenges she never thought she’d have to endure. This is not only a celebration of Black artistry and entrepreneurship but also of a woman’s legacy fueled by resilience, determination, and love. A play celebrating the life and legacy of Idlewild, the legendary Black resort community known as the “Motown before Motown.” This new work, developed through Jubilee Theatre’s New Works program, highlights the indomitable spirit of a woman who defies all odds to keep her dream alive.
