Our culture traditionally makes 'new years resolutions' involving feeling better: losing weight, exercising, etc. The place you live has a tremendous affect on your emotional state and, therefore, on your physical wellness too. I encourage you, as you live in your habitat during the next few weeks, look with 'new eyes' and notice what change you might make that would feel like a gift. Make a resolution to make that change to whatever degree you can. Celebrate the victory as it happens!

It is so easy to stop "seeing" our home. We have other things on our mind when coming and going. With the holiday season upon us, this is a perfect time to view your home as a guest would. Observe as though you have never seen it before. Is the walkway clear? Is the entry door (and handle) welcoming? Is there a place just inside for coats and purses? Take care of these small adjustments and be ready for company even without a moment's notice!

Good design in your home has everything to do with your heart and soul...which has roots in your past. Think for a moment. When you were a child where were your favorite places to spend time? When you were there how did you feel? Was it a place that appealed to your sense of security? Being loved? Having fun?

Worked for hours to find the perfect exterior paint color for a client. Now it has to be approved by an uninspired, uninformed, uptight Homeowners Association. I am holding my breath...and preparing for a battle. Most people cannot look at a paint chip and and accurately imagine what it will look like on the walls. Is there a paint selection in your future? Consider these tips...

One of the top questions asked by clients wanting to make purchase decisions that display their 'hip factor' is "Could you tell me what is the next trend?" in color, style and furnishings? Is it the eco-sensitivity or just time for earth tones to come back with a new meaning? Regardless of the reason, "Warm Brown" is happening!

What small project can you take on that could make a difference in how you feel about your home? In four hours or less you can clear a corner, unpack a box, eliminate a stack, w**d a flower bed, plant color at your front door! What would be a meaningful change to you and how would it remove a personal "toleration"?

Winter is a great time to spend making plans for Spring projects! Stoking my creative fires, I visit interesting web sites, devour stacks of books and magazines (poor husband), and love taking walks through neighborhoods while observing what people are doing to make their house reflect those that live there. Where do you get your inspiration? Do you have a Spring project on your agenda?

I know you are crazy busy preparing for the holidays. Just take a minute to scan the new post on "Social networking revealing too much!" on the discussion section of Design RX. You may find a suggestion there that helps your home stay safe from the bad guys while you are out!

Are you expecting overnight company during the holiday season? Make your guest's space a cozy haven! Buy the best 100% cotton sheets you can afford, wash them with fabric softener before making the bed. A small bedside bouquet will lift the spirit & provide inviting
fragrance & a pop of color. Provide a reading lamp & perhaps a night light. Light from the ceiling can make a room feel stark!

Holidays bring stress: travel, planning/executing special meals, shopping, errands, decorating & spending too much money! Never have we needed self care more but we seem not to have time for it. Decide now to make sure that you make it a priority! Under-promise and let "Norman Rockwell" expectations go. Your health and happiness depends on it. Peace!

Just worked with a client that spoke of the horrible experience her Thanksgiving became. Personalities clashing into each other, disrespect passed along with the turkey, passive aggressive conversations. Nothing like dysfunction to put one in a festive mood! (More in comment section)
