June is PTSD Awareness Month đź’™
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) doesn’t just affect adults; children can experience it too. When young people go through trauma, it can impact how they think, feel, and interact with the world around them.

Understanding what PTSD is, and what it isn’t, is an important first step in supporting children who may be struggling. These experiences are not a choice, and they’re not “bad behavior”, they are responses to difficult and often overwhelming situations.

At the Dr. Bill Lewis Center, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and understood. Raising awareness helps us build stronger, more compassionate communities for the youth we serve.

June is PTSD Awareness Month đź’™

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’ve been through, but their behaviors can tell a story. From emotional outbursts to withdrawal or trouble sleeping, the signs of PTSD in children can show up in many different ways.

By learning to recognize these signs, we can respond with patience, understanding, and care—rather than confusion or frustration.

Recognize the signs. Support the healing.

At the Dr. Bill Lewis Center, we’re committed to creating safe, supportive spaces where children can begin to heal and thrive.

🌟 Overcoming ACEs: A Journey to Healing 🌟

1. Acknowledge and Validate Your Experience:
-Awareness: Recognize that ACEs have left an impact. Understand that it’s not your fault—these events happened to you, but they don’t define you.
-Validation: Allow yourself to feel the emotions associated with your experiences. Seek validation from supportive friends, family, or a therapist.

2. Seek Professional Help:
-Therapy: Consider trauma-focused therapy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) can help rewire your brain and address trauma.
-Support Groups: Join support groups where you can connect with others who’ve faced similar challenges. Sharing stories and coping strategies can be empowering.

3. Build Resilience:
-Self-Care: Prioritize self-care. Engage in activities that nourish your mind and body—exercise, meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature.
-Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness to manage stress and stay present. Techniques like deep breathing and grounding can be powerful tools.

4. Rewrite Your Narrative:
-Reframe: Challenge negative beliefs stemming from ACEs. Reframe your story—focus on resilience, growth, and the strength you’ve developed.
-Create New Memories: Cultivate positive experiences. Create new memories that counterbalance the old ones.

5. Break the Cycle:
-Parenting: If you’re a parent, be intentional about breaking the cycle. Seek resources on positive parenting and nurturing healthy relationships.
-Advocate: Raise awareness about ACEs. Advocate for trauma-informed policies and prevention programs.

Remember, healing is nonlinear. Some days will be tough, but progress is possible. You’re not alone—many have walked this path and emerged stronger. 💙

🛡️Building Resilience Through Protective Factors 🛡️

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can have a lasting impact—but they don’t define a child’s future. One of the most powerful ways to support children who have experienced trauma is by strengthening protective factors in their lives.

Protective factors are the positive supports, relationships, and environments that help buffer the effects of adversity and promote healthy development. They don’t erase the past, but they do help children heal, grow, and thrive.

Here are just a few key protective factors that make a difference:
âś… Stable, nurturing relationships with caring adults
Whether it’s a parent, teacher, coach, or mentor—consistent, loving support helps children feel safe and valued.
âś… Safe and supportive environments
Children need spaces—at home, in school, and in the community—where they feel physically and emotionally secure.
âś… Access to mental health and social services
Early, trauma-informed care can help children process their experiences and build coping skills.
âś… Opportunities to build skills and confidence

Activities like sports, art, and academic support give children a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

At the Dr. Bill Lewis Center, we believe in the power of community to create these protective spaces. When we come together to support children and families, we help break the cycle of trauma and build a future rooted in resilience and hope. đź’›
