CREEK STOMP - Thursday, September 17; 1:00-2:30PM

Join us to explore Cedar Creek's ecosystem! We'll wade into the water to hunt for aquatic macroinvertebrates -- tiny critters that reveal the health of our stream.

Suitable for ages 8-adult. Children must be accompanied in the creek by an adult.

You MUST wear closed toed shoes or water shoes!

If you've ever spent time along Cedar Creek, you know there's something special about the way the water moves. Cedar Creek, starting at CR 68 in DeKalb county, is proudly designated a State Dedicated Scenic River, protecting its natural beauty, clean water, and rich wildlife for all of us to enjoy.

One of the coolest features along the banks right now are the iconic Eastern Cottonwood trees. These towering giants LOVE having their toes in the water. If you look closely along the river's edge, you'll spot them thriving in the moist, nutrient-rich soil. Here is why they are so awesome to spot on your next trail walk or paddle:

* Natural Erosion Control - their deep, thirsty root systems anchor the soil, keeping the streambank stable and the water clearer.
* The Sound of the River - Cottonwood leaves have unique, flattened stems that make them rustle and dance in even the softest breeze, creating that soothing background noise as you walk the trail.
*Wildlife Supertrees - from bald eagles nesting in their high canopies to cavity nesting birds lower down, these trees are like mini-apartments for local wildlife.

Next time you're out enjoying our scenic river, take a look up, listen for the rustling leaves, and give a quick nod to the cottonwoods keeping Cedar Creek beautiful and wild.

Attention to those who signed up for the Lunar Eclipse/Moth Night Hike:

We can’t wait to explore the woods after dark with all of you tonight! As we finalize our preparations, here are a few critical reminders to ensure everyone stays safe and has an unforgettable experience:

Sturdy Footwear Required: Trails feature uneven ground, exposed roots, and low-light conditions. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots with good traction. Leave flip-flops, slides, and sandals at home.

Embrace the Dark: Flashlights and headlamps are great to bring for the walk back, but we will keep our light usage to an absolute minimum during the main hike. Walking without artificial light allows our natural night vision to kick in, helping us observe nocturnal wildlife and insect activity without disturbing them.

Dress comfortably for the evening air, bring your curiosity, and get ready for a fantastic night in the wild! See you all soon!

In conjunction with the Allen County Library, we are having a Nature's Story Time on Wednesday, September 9 from 10:30- 11:15AM!

Join our team and help connect people with nature!
We’re looking for an enthusiastic Naturalist to lead outdoor programs, engage visitors, and help care for our natural resources.
🌲 WHAT YOU’LL DO
* Plan and lead nature, recreation, and cultural history programs for all ages
* Work with school groups and visitors
* Create educational exhibits and interpretive materials
* Promote programs and assist with media and marketing
* Train and supervise volunteers
* Assist with natural resource management, including prescribed burns and invasive/exotic plant control
* Maintain and safely operate park equipment
* Help enforce park rules and regulations
* Complete reports and administrative tasks
* Assist with park building maintenance and cleaning
* Perform other duties as assigned
🦋 WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
* Education or experience in naturalist work, environmental education, natural resources, parks & recreation, interpretation, or a related field
* Knowledge of and ability to identify local plants and wildlife
* Strong communication and public speaking skills
* Ability to develop educational, media, and marketing materials
* Comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Valid driver’s license and ability to legally operate a vehicle
* Availability to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evenings as program needs require
