“We Lift As We Climb.” The Allen County Young Dems are so grateful to Phil Giaquinta for having us at his annual fundraiser at the TinCaps game. It was a beautiful night of connections. Being invited to events like this is so important for young people; it allows us to be in spaces and connect with leaders we might not otherwise have access to 💙

🧱 FORT WAYNE BROUGHT ITS BRICKS.

And last night, you showed what happens when a community chooses to build together.

A room set for approximately 300 people was nearly full.

38 public comments.
7 of 9 City Council members present.
And from what I witnessed, the YES significantly outweighed the NO.

But the numbers aren’t the most powerful part of this story.

The PEOPLE are.

Before the Anchor Resource Center forum, I asked you to BRING YOUR BRICKS TO THE TABLE.

Your experiences.
Your questions.
Your concerns.
Your expertise.
Your compassion.
Your solutions.

And Fort Wayne showed up.

One downtown resident offered words I won’t soon forget:

“Please don’t use me as a reason to not move forward.”

We heard from faith leaders, downtown residents, business owners, healthcare professionals, service providers, parents, advocates and people with lived experience.

We heard about people who need somewhere to shower, wash their clothes, receive mail, charge a phone, connect with mental-health and employment services — and ultimately find a pathway toward housing.

Mayor Sharon Tucker reminded us:

“When I took the oath to become mayor, I took an oath that I would represent all of our community.”

And that’s the point.

Our unhoused neighbors are not THEM. They are US.

Yes, concerns were raised about security, children, funding, accountability and neighborhood impact.

Those concerns deserve thoughtful answers.

But concern does not have to mean obstruction.

🧱 Compassion.
🧱 Accountability.
🧱 Public safety.
🧱 Recovery.
🧱 Employment.
🧱 Dignity.
🧱 Housing.

Different bricks.

One community.

We don’t need to throw our bricks at one another.

We need to bring them to the table and BUILD.

Brick by brick.
Neighbor by neighbor.
Partner by partner.

🧱 LET’S KEEP BUILDING, FORT WAYNE.

Reminder to please join us tomorrow at 7pm. All are welcome!

Feeling what’s happening nationally? It’s passing down through our city and county councils and our local state government. We push back here, together. In times that feel heavy with cruelty and division, we become the hope we’re crying out for.

The Allen County Young Dems are thrilled to welcome Cohen Wiwi as our featured speaker; a 19-year-old community advocate, political science student at Purdue Fort Wayne, and candidate for Washington Township Trustee.

Cohen is running to bring real, local change, township accessibility, fiscal transparency, and stronger community resources. He’s proof that you don’t need to wait to be a certain age or even ask for permission to lead; you just need courage and a deep love for your neighbors.

After Cohen speaks we’ll move into open dialogue and collaborative planning for the local fights ahead. When we come together around our shared values, we aren’t just a safe space, we are power united.

Bring your hurt, frustrations, your hope, your ideas, and your people. Let’s activate this generation right here at home.
