On Friday we recieved a call that trash truck #6 had a battery light come on and the truck had shut off during it's route. We ran out to see what was going on and quickly found that the alternator had stopped working. We were able to jump the truck and get it into a parking lot and off the street. A quick trip back to the shop to grab our service trailer, a new alternator and some extra tools and we were able to replace it out in the parking lot. The truck was back on the road in less then 2 hours.

One big advantage to our much larger shop is the ability to maintain our tub grinder inside. After about 3-4 years of use, the rods and hammers were in need of replacment. This job is very labor intensive due to using a large sledge hammer to rattle the hammers loose in order to pull the rods out. Each row of hammers has 2 rods that keep them attached to the drum. A total of 20 hammers and 8 rods were replaced.

While our bigger trucks usually get upfitted at an outside source, all of our smaller trucks get upfitted in house. We recently took delivery of two 2026 Colorado's that will get some lights installed along with other small odds and ends depending on their use. This one will replace our Highway superintendent's truck. The 2nd truck will be a replacement for our parks and rec department.

Today one of our techs took a 3 hour drive out to check the progress on our new hook truck that is being build. Due to the complexity of this truck and all of its functions, meeting face to face with the builders helps keep the truck on track and makes sure nothing is missed or overlooked.

With winter in our rear view mirror we have been able to get back into our normal routine when it comes to maintaining our trash and recycle trucks. Wednesday's have always been known as our trash truck day. We like to do a general function check, grease the chassis and adjust the brakes. A hydraulic leak was found on the arm of the recycle truck on the left. The trash truck on the right on the lift was due for an engine service along with a transmission service.

As the end of the month approaches, this trailer is the last of our equipment that has to be inspected this month. This trailer was the worst with its rust, needing the whole top rail replaced. The old one was cut off and a new piece welded on. The other side will also get about half of the top rail replaced and it will be ready to go to work for the year.

This Colorado came in with a oil leak and coolant leak. We found that a leaking valve cover gasket leaked oil on to some coolant hoses on the back of the cylinder head making them soft and leak. You can see that the gasket is flush with the valve cover allowing oil to leak out. All contaminated hoses were replaced and a new gasket was installed.

Busy week so far here in the motorpool. We have a staff car that was having shifting issues. Our tech pulled the module out of the transmission and found fluid pressure switches that had gone bad. We have a Upper Dublin Parks & Recreation department truck with a rotted floor board that needs to be repaired for state inspection. We also have a Upper Dublin Township Police Department patrol car that had stopped running during the overnight shift that needed a fuel pump. These are some of the bigger jobs along with our normal inspections and services done through the week.

The driver of our number 2 trash truck reported a noise and vibration while driving. Our tech did a quick inspection of the driveshaft and found the center support bearing had completely deteriorated. We removed and disassembled the driveshaft to replace the bad bearing. With the driveshaft out we inspected the u-joints and found one that was showing signs of wear and replaced it. The driveshaft was put back in and the truck was returned to service.

While this truck was out early this morning doing a quick salt for the morning commute the check engine light came on and the truck went into de-rate. When a truck goes into de-rate its power is reduced and speed is limited. We hooked up our computer and checked for active codes. We found 2 codes for our upstream and downstream NOX sensors for the trucks emission system. We checked for power at the sensors and worked our way back to this control relay in the battery box. You can see this relay has rubbed a small hole in the top. This allowed salt and water to get into the relay stopping it from functioning properly. A new relay was installed and power was restored to the sensors. Fortunately while working on this issue, other issues due to the salt were found and will be repaired before they become larger issues.
