ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE June 5, 2026:

The northbound lane of Perry Ave SE from Brooks Street to U.S. Highway 98 (SEE MAP) will be closed Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day weekend. During this time frame, the northbound lane will be barricaded at both Brooks Street and U.S. Highway 98.

The southbound portion of this road will remain open.

The lane closure is meant to reduce vehicle congestion on residential streets from motorists trying to “cut through” neighborhoods to access U.S. Highway 98 eastbound via Brooks Street and Perry Avenue.

A message board on Hollywood Boulevard will alert motorists that there is no outlet to U.S. Highway 98 through residential streets.

Southbound motorists trying to access U.S. Highway 98 are encouraged to do so via Eglin Parkway (State Road 85).

We congratulate Mary Ann and Kirby Locklear, whose Kenwood home earned our June 2026 Yard of the Month award.

Kirby and Mary Ann moved to their home in 1995, and in the years since, have turned both front and back yards into a paradise for pollinators.

A large flower garden anchors the front yard of their corner lot, framed by rich green yard of St. Augustine grass. The garden is filled with pollinator-friendly plants like beach sunflower, penta, black-eyed Susan, lantana, coreopsis, and a variety of milkweed.

“Everything here feeds either hummingbirds, butterflies, or bees,” said Mary Ann, noting that she doesn’t use herbicides or other harmful chemicals.

Pollinator plants also circle the house and fill the back yard. A plaque on the house from the National Wildlife Federation designates the property as a certified wildlife habitat, providing essential food, water, cover, and places for wild birds and insects to raise their young.

The Locklears don’t just provide the habitat for pollinators; they actually raise butterflies in their back yard. Mary Ann said that they have raised and released about 200 Monarchs this year.

Mary Ann has the green thumb in the family, but Kirby pitches in as well, providing often providing mulch for the garden beds. Mary Ann estimates she spends at least a couple of hours per day tending to the flowers in the spring but takes a break when it gets too hot.

“About mid-July, I say goodbye to the garden; you’re on your own,” said Mary Ann. “It’s just too hot and too humid.”

We applaud the Locklears dedication to their yard and to providing a safe haven for our pollinators and congratulate them on being recognized as our June 2026 Yard of the Month.

REMINDER: Big cleanup at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026

The City of Fort Walton Beach is teaming up with Ocean Hour Okaloosa, Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, and Keep Okaloosa Beautiful for the biggest cleanup yet as part of our Cleanest City on the Emerald Coast campaign.

We’ll be cleaning up the shoreline of Santa Rosa Sound and the sidewalk alongside U.S. Highway 98 from Liza Jackson Park east to the Fort Walton Beach Landing on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

How it works: Pick where you want to start (we have three locations)

✅Liza Jackson Park (roadside or shoreline)
✅Sound Park (roadside or shoreline)
✅Fort Walton Beach Landing (roadside or shoreline)

Volunteers at Liza Jackson Park will move east, volunteers at the Fort Walton Beach Landing will move west, and volunteers at Sound Park will move out in both directions. We'll meet in the middle after about a half-mile walk.

Multiple ways to volunteer:
✅Have a kayak or paddleboard? Help clean up marine debris from the shoreline
✅Prefer dry land? Clean up at one of the parks or alongside U.S. Highway 98
✅Is your business or home located on Santa Rosa Sound? Host your own cleanup! Give us the trash!
