Drivers in Fort Valley can finally ditch detours as the downtown U.S. 341 railroad crossing reopens after two years of construction. GDOT did the construction work.

🚧🎉 After years of planning and months of construction, the Highway 96/341 Railroad Intersection project is officially complete!

To celebrate this important milestone, the Peach Regional Chamber of Commerce will host an opening ceremony on Friday, May 22 at 9:00 a.m.

This project is a true testament to the power of collaboration and partnership. We extend our appreciation to the City of Fort Valley, Peach County, CW Matthews, Norfolk Southern, and the Georgia Department of Transportation for their dedication and commitment to bringing this project to completion. 🍑

Mayor Reeves intro to the GDOT team 3/27/26:

Latest update from GDOT 4/7/26: The only outstanding items remaining are the concrete island, blisters, asphalt work, and final striping.

The contractor anticipates beginning the paving operation in May. The current contract completion date is June 1, 2026.

Note: we were told prior to this it would be completed end of April.

Update 3/4/26: last month there was some remaining drainage infrastructure to work on, but the construction is moving along at a pretty rapid pace now. They were originally hoping to be finished in April, but with the snags they run into on infrastructure, it is probably pushed into May before intersection is opened back up.

Update 1/7/25
This was delayed further due to the water valve adjustment. The utility company completed some of the relocation over the break and expects to complete the rest next week. CWM is expected to come in next week to start on the storm drain installation.

341/96 intersection project update: I checked with our area GDOT board representative and she gave this update on the delay that happened.
"Following up on Fort Valley: there was quite a bit of delay due to Fort Valley Utility Commission and Norfolk Southern, having some dispute over permits for Utility work. That was resolved in December, and the contractor then proceeded with scheduling flagging operations with the railroad. Contractor will be mobilizing again in the next couple weeks." Cathy Williams
