When we think about South Carolina history, we often think of grand homes, famous leaders, and beautiful places. But sometimes the most fascinating stories belong to people whose lives don’t fit neatly into a history book.

Hazel Weisse was one of those people.

For 33 years, from 1936 to 1969, Hazel ran the Sunset Lodge just outside Georgetown. She was a madam, and the Lodge became one of the state’s most talked-about establishments.

But there was another side to Hazel. She was known throughout Georgetown for her generosity, donating to charities, providing Thanksgiving food baskets, supporting organizations such as the March of Dimes and Easter Seals, and helping families in need. One Georgetown resident reportedly called her “our own United Way.”

History isn’t always neat. Sometimes it is complicated, surprising, and deeply human.

On National South Carolina Day, we remember Hazel Weisse and the fascinating story of the Sunset Lodge—a unique and unforgettable part of Georgetown’s history.
