The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Participant’s Manual (2014 edition) is an excellent home or office reference because it provides clear, trusted step-by-step guidance on life-saving skills for common emergencies—cardiac arrest, choking, severe bleeding, burns, shock, stroke, seizures, and more—empowering anyone to act confidently until help arrives.
While newer editions add updates like opioid response, its core techniques remain accurate and effective for most household and workplace scenarios. Pair it with the free Red Cross First Aid app for any modern tweaks, and you’ll have a reliable, no-nonsense resource far better than nothing.

It’s mid-February already, and hurricane season officially starts June 1, just a few months away. Now is the perfect time to start pulling together your hurricane survival kit so you’re not scrambling at the last minute when prices spike, shelves go empty, and lines stretch out the door. By grabbing a few items here and there over the coming weeks and months—think bottled water (1 gallon per person per day), non-perishable foods, batteries, flashlights, a weather radio, first-aid supplies, medications, pet food, cash, and important documents in a waterproof bag—you can spread out the cost, shop sales, and avoid the big expenses and stress that hit when everyone panics at once. Check Ready.gov or your Parish’s emergency management site for full checklists, and rotate items so nothing expires. Being prepared early makes a huge difference—let’s stay ahead of the storms this year! 🌪️ Stay safe out there.

This guide can help you and your family stay safe during extreme cold by teaching you how to prepare your home and car in advance. It stresses the importance of having emergency kits with non-perishable food, water, and alternative heating sources, while also ensuring those sources are used safely to prevent fires or carbon monoxide poisoning. The guide also explains how to dress properly for the cold and how to recognize and respond to serious health problems like hypothermia and frostbite.

Keep gas tank above half full in winter. Empty tanks collect condensation that freezes in fuel lines - your car won't start. You're stranded in subzero temps with no heat.

Never run a generator inside your home, garage, basement, or near doors and windows. Always place portable generators 20+ feet away from your house, in a well-ventilated area, pointing exhaust away from living spaces. Carbon monoxide is odorless and deadly, you won’t know it’s there until it’s too late. Use a battery-powered CO detector and stay alert. Your family’s life depends on it.
