Graduation season is a time for reflection, change, and hope for the future. But this graduation season was even more sweet, as we celebrated the milestone of one of our teens in foster care. 🥳

One of our teens has been in the foster care system for almost six years. During that time, she experienced countless challenges and adversity that at times seemed almost impossible to overcome. Her lack of hope turned into isolation, and she pushed away or rejected any kind of support offered to her. She was burdened by the trajectory her life seemed to be on and did not see any way out.

However, as she approached her 18th birthday, things started to change. The consistency of the Guardian ad Litem team and other child welfare partners supporting her finally started to click. She began listening to the options available to her for a better future. She accepted mental health services that helped stabilize her. She channeled her interest of art into a healthy outlet.

Last month she achieved a milestone at times she never thought possible – graduation. Now doors are open for her future she never imagined. She is gearing up to go to college to be an ultrasound technician while minoring in art. She has supports in place to help carry her through the next chapter ahead. She turned a past that made her hopeless into a future that she can be proud of. We are so proud of her and look forward to a bright and beautiful journey for her ahead! 😄

June is National Reunification Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the journeys of families who overcome challenges and become stronger together.

One Florida mother faced battles with mental health and substance abuse, ultimately losing her parental rights. Determined to change the course of her family's future, she sought help, engaged with community providers, and worked tirelessly to create a safe and stable home. Through sobriety, accountability, and unwavering commitment, she transformed her life.

Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Jim Eiffert became an important part of the family's support system. He connected the mother with resources, supported the older children through their healing process, and helped facilitate meaningful connections between them and their mother.

Rebuilding trust was not easy, but the family remained committed to the journey. Eventually, the children were reunited with their mother. With the advocacy of the Guardian ad Litem team and collaboration with child welfare partners, the court later reinstated the mother's parental rights.

Today, the family is fully and legally reunited.

The Florida Guardian ad Litem Office is honored to witness stories of resilience, redemption, and hope. Sometimes, the most meaningful outcomes are those that once seemed impossible.

June is National Reunification Month!

It is a time to celebrate the strength of families working to overcome challenges, rebuild relationships, and reunite.

One such story involves a 3-year-old girl who entered foster care in late 2023. Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Fran Abilock became an important part of the child's multidisciplinary team, building a relationship with the father and providing encouragement and support as he worked to strengthen his parenting skills and create a stable home for his daughter.

With the support of Fran and the child's foster parents, the father remained committed to his daughter's well-being and worked hard to provide the safe, stable home she needed.

Late last year, the little girl was reunified with her father. Today, they are thriving, and Fran continues to be a positive presence in their lives.

This heartwarming story highlights how reunification is possible when we all come together with respect, dedication, and understanding.

The Florida Guardian ad Litem Office – Circuit 19 believes ongoing training is an essential component of the support our volunteers receive. There is always something new to learn as we continue enhancing our representation of abused, abandoned, and neglected children in court and the community.

Earlier this month, we had a great turnout for our in-service training on Motivational Interviewing, led by some of our very own staff members! It was an interactive workshop-style training designed to dive deeper into utilizing motivational interviewing as a method for helping people find their internal motivation for finding solutions to their problems. We appreciated those that joined us for this training and the engaging conversations that were had!
