Today we remember and honor the great sacrifices of those who have volunteered to stand up for democracy and to defend our nation and the ideals that it embodies. They gave up everything for us to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

We’re excited to announce that State Representative Angie Nixon and Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Alex Vindman, both candidates for the United States Senate, are joining the speaker lineup for the 2026 Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus Summer Conference on Saturday in Orlando.

At a moment when democracy, equality, and fundamental freedoms are under attack across Florida and the nation, bringing together leaders willing to fight back matters more than ever.

Angie Nixon has been one of Florida’s strongest voices for working families, LGBTQ+ rights, public education, and has been on the front lines in the fight against illegal redistricting in the state of Florida. Alex Vindman became nationally known for defending democracy and the Constitution at great personal and professional cost.

Their addition to this year’s conference reinforces what this weekend is about: building strategy, building community, and building the power we need for the fights ahead.

Join Democratic leaders, activists, organizers, candidates, and advocates from across Florida for a weekend focused on the future of our movement.

Today is Harvey Milk Day and we honor his legacy with action in fighting for civil rights and equality. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man elected to office in California in 1977. In his short time in office, he sponsored a bill banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing, and employment. The bill passed 11–1. That 1 No vote was cast by the man who assassinated him less than a year after he was elected. Like Milk, we must all be brave in fighting for diversity, equity and inclusion for all Americans.

Last Call for Conference Scholarship Applications ⏰

We believe LGBTQ+ Democrats from every corner of Florida deserve a seat at the table. That’s why scholarship applications for the 2026 Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus Summer Conference are still open… but not for much longer.

Scholarships include a $175 stipend to cover the cost of a Saturday conference ticket in Orlando this July. In exchange, scholarship recipients volunteer for two hours during the conference and help make the weekend a success for everyone attending.

If cost has been standing between you and this year’s conference, this is your moment to apply.

The weekend will feature organizing conversations, strategy sessions, community building, and keynote remarks from Malcolm Kenyatta alongside Democratic leaders and activists from across Florida.

Caucus President Kristen Browde on the passing of Rep Barney Frank:

"Barney, with integrity & courage, showed the world that one can be a great leader no matter who they love. Here in Florida, he showed conservative Democrats that they are stronger with us than they ever imagined."

Across Florida, LGBTQ+ communities and our allies are navigating an increasingly challenging political landscape—one where attacks on our rights, our healthcare, and our very existence are not just rhetoric, but policy. For many, the focus has been on survival: protecting what we have, defending against harmful legislation, and supporting one another through uncertainty.

But survival is not the end goal.

This panel brings together organizers, advocates, and leaders who are shifting the conversation from defense to offense—building real, sustainable power even in the face of opposition. Through candid discussion and real-world examples, panelists will explore how movements can grow stronger under pressure, how to engage communities that have been historically overlooked, and how to turn moments of crisis into opportunities for connection, mobilization, and change.

From rural organizing to coalition-building, from messaging that resonates beyond our base to strategies that win elections, this conversation will focus on what it actually takes to move from holding the line to moving it forward.

Because even in the most difficult environments, we are not standing still—we are organizing, we are building, and we are winning.

Moderator: Nathan Sharp, Managing Director, Sharp Ideas LLC, and President, NCR LGBTQ+ Democrats

Panelists:
Ant Avila, Tampa Bay Community Organizer, Equality Florida
Cat Margaux, President, Florida Young Democrats
Paul Snatchko, VicePresident, Lake Nona Democrats
