Look what Rachel made for us!

Rachel has been spending her evenings helping serve dinner at Valerie’s House Charlotte County, always jumping in wherever she’s needed.

Then she surprised us with this handmade sign for our front door.

This was a pretty awesome surprise.

Our friends at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s offered to sponsor dinner for all of our remaining Charlotte County group nights that still needed one.

And judging by these pictures, the kids were pretty happy with dinner too.

Sometimes you’re reminded just how small the world really is.

Before finding her way to Valerie’s House, our Director of Programs Keri Tutterrow was a school counselor at Oasis High School, where Jackson was one of her students.

Jackson recently came to Valerie’s House with his mentor, board member Mike McMurray, to tour the house and volunteer on a group night. Imagine the surprise when he walked in and saw “Miss Tutterrow.”

Sometimes the people who shape our lives have a way of finding their way back into our story.

25 years later, we remember.

On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced unimaginable loss. Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the families who were forever changed, and the heroes who ran toward danger to help others.

Behind every number, however, is a person who was loved and someone who had to learn how to live with their loss.

At Valerie's House, we know grief has no expiration date. Children and families can carry loss for years, even decades. Remembering those we have lost is part of how we honor their lives and continue moving forward.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the families who continue to grieve.

They just keep showing up.

Our friends at Ho***rs have been longtime dinner sponsors at all three of our Southwest Florida locations, and they never make it about themselves.

They just care about our community and making sure grieving children and families know they’re not alone.

In Charlotte County, Destinee comes every month and has really gotten to know our families. We’re grateful for people who care enough to keep showing up.

What’s a memory of someone you’ve lost that you never want to forget?

Did your life change after they died? What does hope feel like to you, and what gives you hope?

Just a few of the questions we asked during an activity called Juggling Grief.

The kids tried to keep a bunch of balloons in the air without letting any hit the floor. Grief can feel a lot like that. We’re juggling so much that it can lead to anger, stress, or feeling overwhelmed, especially when we’re trying to do it alone.

Activities like this open up real conversations in our peer grief support groups and remind our kids they don’t have to carry it all by themselves.

“I feel love. It’s just so much love here.”

Valerie’s House board member and past board chair Mike McMurray lost his dad, Harold, in a car accident when he was just 10 years old.

We sat down with Mike on the bench he sponsored in his dad’s honor to talk about his own grief, his connection to Valerie’s House and why being here for grieving children and families means so much to him.

For Mike, this work is personal.
