Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve

Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve The Matanzas Pass Preserve is located on the seven-mile long barrier island of Estero, in the town of Fort Myers Beach, Florida.

The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve (“Friends”) is an independent volunteer organization that works with Lee County Department of Parks and Recreation for the maintenance and preservation of the Matanzas Pass Preserve. The 60 acre preserve runs along Matanzas Pass and is one of the few undeveloped, protected areas on the island. As such it offers visitors a rare opportunity to view Estero Island as it was before it became the popular beach resort that it is today.

Project Monarch is a Citizen Scientist program sponsored by the Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve. This notice is intended for those individuals who have not attended one of our work days.
What we do:
• We plant milkweeds, the obligate plant for Monarch larva.
• We maintain the plants by keeping plots clear of vegetation
• We use data sheets to record our observations on the growth of milkweeds, to count butterfly eggs, and the number and size of caterpillars to determine when a caterpillars will from a chrysalis.
• We maintain a butterfly cage to permit caterpillars to grow to maturity and fly away.
• We are planning to do research on the infection of milkweeds and how to remove the infection that is killing the Monarchs.

We will be having a Work Day this coming Friday, June 29th. We meet at 8 am at the Red Coconut Parking lot where Donora Blvd curves If you want to know about Monarchs and how to raise them, then pay us a visit next Friday.
