Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: The Connection to Spina Bifida

For many people with Spina Bifida, hydrocephalus is part of their health journey from the very start.

Hydrocephalus occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain. About 60–80% of people with Spina Bifida need a shunt to help drain that excess fluid and relieve pressure on the brain.

While a shunt can effectively manage hydrocephalus, it also requires lifelong awareness. Shunts can malfunction or become infected, making it important for people with Spina Bifida, their families, and caregivers to understand how their shunt works and know what changes may signal a problem.

This Hydrocephalus Awareness Month, we’re highlighting a condition that is an important part of life for so many members of our community.

September is Hydrocephalus Awareness Month and Sepsis Awareness Month — two observances that are especially important to the community that we serve.

Hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain, affects many people with Spina Bifida, and about 60–80% need a shunt to help manage it. People with Spina Bifida may also face a higher risk of urinary tract, shunt-related, and skin infections. If one becomes severe, it can lead to sepsis, the body’s extreme, life-threatening response that can damage tissues and organs.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing more about hydrocephalus and sepsis, how they can affect people with Spina Bifida, and why early recognition of the signs of a potential problem is critical.

Awareness gives people the knowledge to recognize changes, ask questions, and advocate for their health.
