The Russell House was quarters of the Major-General Francois chevalier Beauvoir de Chastellux in June 1781.

In June 1781, Major-General François-Jean de Beauvoir, Chevalier de Chastellux (who later became the Marquis de Chastellux) served as a high-ranking French officer and liaison between General Comte de Rochambeau and George Washington.

During this time, he stayed at the Joseph and William Russell House in Providence, Rhode Island.
