Tonight’s Event Canceled Due to Weather

The Town of Fort Mill has made the decision to cancel tonight’s event at Walter Y. Elisha Park due to the potential for thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and heavy rainfall throughout the evening.

With approximately 2,000 people expected to attend, the safety of our residents, visitors, staff and event partners is our highest priority. Given the forecast and the potential for rapidly changing weather conditions, we believe canceling the event in advance is the safest and most responsible decision.

We recognize the disappointment this may cause and appreciate everyone’s understanding. Thank you for helping us keep our community safe.

National Police Woman Day recognizes the courage, commitment and contributions of women in law enforcement. Join us as we get to know these two officers, hear about their experiences and learn what inspires them to serve and protect the Fort Mill community each day. 🚔💙

Meet Payten Sellers, Detective, Criminal Investigations Division

What is a typical week like in your job?: “No week is ever the same. I start by scanning emails to catch up on what happened overnight (usually swapping coffee for a Dr. Pepper or Alani, depending on the mood). Then it’s full throttle: phone calls, follow-ups, and the intense, precise work of drafting and serving search warrants. It’s fast-paced, unpredictable, and the mix of investigation and fieldwork keeps every day interesting.”

Why did you want to pursue a career in law enforcement?: “I enjoy understanding why and how things happen, and this role lets me provide clear answers to others who share that curiosity. I take pride in supporting people both during their brightest moments and their most vulnerable ones.”

What is your favorite part of working in Fort Mill?: “I love that the people I work closely with have become my family.”

Meet Lee Cutler, School Resource Officer at Fort Mill Middle School (known to her students as Officer Lee or Coach Lee)

What is a typical week like in your job?: “A typical week for me involves keeping our school grounds safe, mentoring students, hosting book club, learning alongside students in their classrooms, teaching individualized classes like internet safety, and collaborating with school administrators to support families every day.”

Why did you want to pursue a career in law enforcement?: “I chose a career in law enforcement to serve my community, make a positive impact on youth, and build trust-filled relationships between officers and families. Becoming an SRO has been an extra special blessing—as a former early childhood educator and transitional kindergarten teacher, I love combining my educational background with law enforcement to support both our students and staff daily.”

What is your favorite part of working in Fort Mill?: “Having grown up attending Fort Mill schools myself, my favorite part of working here is giving back to the community that shaped me. Raised with the support of incredible teachers, it’s an honor to now work alongside some of them as colleagues. Together, we get to pour back into the community and support our town's next generation as they grow, learn and thrive.”

Twenty-five years later, the memories of Sept. 11, 2001, remain vivid for so many. Today, Town of Fort Mill employees reflect on where they were that day, what they remember and how the events of 9/11 continue to resonate with them.

We remember the lives lost, honor the heroes and ensure we never forget.

Fort Mill IT Systems Analyst Gary Weis shares his story:

Where were you and what were you doing on Sept. 11, 2001?
“I was in Colorado, a suburb of Denver, at the time. I forgot something at my apartment so after 9 a.m. I drove back to get it and on the way I heard about the Towers being hit on the radio. Then later I heard about Flight 93 crashing in Pennsylvania, near my house where I grew up.”

What do you hope people remember about that day?
“I’d like everyone to remember those who lost their lives in this event plus those who responded and the way the U.S. pulled together to assist and help one another.”

Fort Mill Fire Department Administrative Assistant Lisa Miller shares her story:

Where were you and what were you doing on Sept. 11, 2001?
“On September 11th, I was a teacher in Fairfax, VA, less than 15 miles from the Pentagon. The Twin Towers in NY and the Pentagon were struck, and our school was filled with fear and uncertainty. We had a large student body whose parents worked at the Pentagon and throughout DC, so this was very personal for many of our families and staff. It was chaos – phone lines were down, communication was nearly impossible and no one knew what was going to happen next. There were rumors there was a plane still circling DC area. Our principal came over the intercom and gave students whose parents worked at the Pentagon permission to leave so they could get home and check on their families. I remember driving students home who didn’t have cars to help them get home to their loved ones.”

What do you hope people remember about that day?
“I want people to remember the humanity of that day. So many Americans faced with unimaginable fear, uncertainty and tragedy, and yet people stepped up and helped one another. Strangers helped strangers. We were united Americans!”

Fort Mill Police Officer Victor Mele (who was recognized during the Town’s Remembrance Ceremony this morning for his heroic work in New York the day of the attacks) shares his story:

Where were you and what were you doing on Sept. 11, 2001?
“I was on duty on September 11th working for the New York City Police Dept and was working a day shift. I was assigned to plainclothes at the West 42nd St. and 8th Avenue subway station. After the towers were struck, I was reassigned with one Sergeant and eight other NYPD officers to respond to the World Trade Center for rescue and recovery.”

What do you hope people remember about that day?
“The biggest thing I want people to remember was that we as a country were united under one cause, everyone was proud to be an American. There was a lot of patriotism during that period. I also want people to remember what happened that day and that first responders from all departments responded to do their jobs and serve the people of New York City no matter the cost.”

🔔25th Anniversary of 9-11 Ceremony

The Town of Fort Mill hosted our Sept. 11 Day of Remembrance ceremony this morning to remember those we lost during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, honor the heroes who responded, and recognize the strength and unity that emerged from one of our nation’s darkest days.

The public is invited to watch a video of the ceremony below which featured a ringing of church bells marking the moment American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, a brief timeline of September 11, 2001, a ceremonial reading of the names of the 412 first responders who lost their lives that day and a moment of silence.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.
We honor.
We give thanks.
We will never forget.

September 11, 2026, marks the 25th anniversary of a day that forever changed our nation.

The Town of Fort Mill invites our community to pause together—to remember those we lost, honor the heroes who responded, and recognize the strength and unity that emerged from one of our nation’s darkest days.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 | A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

🔔 8:46 A.M. | Ringing of the Bells
At 8:46 a.m., participating Downtown churches will join together in the Ringing of the Bells, marking the moment American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Following the bells, a commemorative ceremony will take place in front of Fort Mill Town Hall featuring:

A brief timeline of September 11, 2001
A ceremonial reading of the names of the 412 first responders who lost their lives that day
A moment of silence
🔔 A final ringing of the bells

Town staff, the Fort Mill American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, and the South Carolina Strawberry Queens will participate in the reading of the names as a collective expression of remembrance and gratitude.

Fort Mill Town hall will host a Visual Display that will include:
• Large patriotic wreaths displayed in the front windows facing North White Street.
• A Fort Mill Police Department patrol vehicle with a memorial wreath.
• A Fort Mill Fire Department display featuring turnout gear beneath a department tent with a memorial wreath.
• 412 American flags displayed on the Town Hall lawn in honor of the 412 first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.
• A large American flag suspended near North White Street near the Town Hall Remembrance area, donated by Sunbelt Rentals.

Community Partnerships

Boy Scouts of America – Palmetto Council
The Town has partnered with the Boy Scouts of America Palmetto Council as they host the 2026 Flags for Heroes display in Fort Mill. The Flags for Heroes display will be on display Sept. 10-16 in Walter Elisha Park. You can find details here: https://www.palmettocouncil.org/flags-for-heroes

Fort Mill American Legion Post 43 & Auxiliary
The Town has partnered with Fort Mill American Legion Post 43 and the American Legion Auxiliary to collect thank-you cards and letters of appreciation for local first responders to be distributed at the American Legions 9/11 First Responder Appreciation Lunch on Friday, Sept. 11. The lunch is Free to First Responders. The Public is invited to attend for just $5.
