Anniversary of the Battle of Wilson's Creek
Since 1906, the US Army has utilized the staff ride to promote the military history instuction of our leaders. Today the CBRN School Captains Career Course and the NCO Senior Leader Course conduct staff rides of Wilson's Creek National Battlefield to fulfill this requirement. On 10 August 1861, Union forces under the command of BG Nathaniel Lyon clashed with the pro-Southern Missouri State Guard led by MG Sterling Price and Confederate forces led by BG Benjamin McCulloch. In addition to emphasizing the application of the principles of war, the staff ride at Wilson's Creek provides an outdoor classroom to study the operational art of war. FM 3-0 Operations, emphasizes the importance of large scale combat operations.
