A Division of the Broward County Public Works and Environmental Services Department (PWESD) Broward County Resilient Environment programs are focused on increasing community resiliency, and planning necessary adaptation measures to address the local impacts of sea level rise, crippling traffic, and severe economic inequities. By implementing these actions, Broward County moves forward on building

a greener, more sustainable, and climate-resilient community. Our aim is to build stronger communities and infrastructure; protect critical sectors of our industry, government and natural resources; and use sound science to better understand and address climate impacts. Our strategies include modeling vulnerabilities and analyzing risks, thoughtful planning, developing sound public policies, convening support through stakeholder involvement, and implementing projects and economic investments. This culvert replacement project in City of Cooper City, FL Government is a multi-agency funding strategy to secure more than $2.3 million for this critical infrastructure project, including $450,000 via the Broward County Resilient Broward Grant Program.

This project is important to maintain proper drainage, roadway stability, and public safety in the surrounding areas.

On February 26, members of the Resilience Unit attended the 2nd Annual Resilient Broward event, bringing together the business community and local governments to discuss how to craft solutions for a more resilient future. The event's emcee, Laurie Jennings, shared her takeaways from the event and looks ahead to the Climate Leadership Summit from November 4-6 at the Broward County Convention Center.

Last Friday, the Broward County Resilience Unit and the Cortada Foundation presented to more than 150 students at West Broward High School for the Underwater: Broward project!

We talked about how future conditions in South Florida are changing, what sea level rise means for our communities, and how students can get involved in practical solutions to address flooding and extreme heat. The school also received an elevation mural showing their campus sits just 5 feet above sea level, a powerful reminder of why engagement and local action matters.

These conversations with youth are always thoughtful and an encouraging reminder that the future leaders of our community are ready to create a better world today.

A big thank you to the West Broward Student Government Association for hosting and all their assistance during the event!
