Happy Labor Day! Today, we celebrate the workers who have helped build, shape and move our communities forward, including generations of LGBTQ+ people who fought not only for equality, but for the freedom to live and work authentically.

Their courage helped open doors, change workplaces and create opportunities for those who came after them. 🏳️‍🌈

History isn’t just something we read about, sometimes we get to hold onto the pages that captured it. 📰🏳️‍🌈

These 1996 newspapers offer a glimpse into how LGBTQ+ communities across the country were reporting, reacting, organizing, and making their voices heard during the fight against DoMA.

Nearly 30 years later, preserving these stories gives us the chance to see not only how much has changed, but the people and voices that helped push that change forward.

All social movements are built on those movements that came before them. The Women’s Movement was no different. What set it apart was the brilliance of its leaders and the fierce energy they presented to the world.

That confidence inspired the movements that followed. Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library mourns the loss and celebrates the life of pioneer, Gloria Steinem who has passed away at 92, leaving a legacy for the ages.

Women’s stories matter

08/28/2026

Every object in an archive has a story behind it, and some might surprise you. 🤺🏳️‍🌈

During our Women’s Fund gathering, Robert shared a glimpse at one remarkable collection recently donated to Stonewall: the archive of a local Paralympian, Terry “Scooter” Hayes, who competes in wheelchair fencing, including her sword, mask, photographs, and boxes of materials documenting her journey.

It’s exactly why Stonewall’s National Women’s Fund matters: ensuring women know that their stories, achievements, and history belong in the archive. That history and those stories matter.

Help us preserve the stories, voices, and history that deserve to be remembered, donate today: https://givebutter.com/support-stonewall-
