I started my week off right by meeting with an amazing group of students at Sunrise Middle School! Hearing directly from students about how they use technology — both in and out of the classroom — is one of the most valuable parts of this work. Their perspectives remind me why decisions made in the boardroom matter so much in the classroom. A special thank you to our student advisor to the school board for helping facilitate such a great discussion, and to Assistant Principal Austin for bringing together such a wonderful and diverse group of students. 🎓💡

Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer was a light in the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a true public servant and servant leader. She worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the most vulnerable among us. She cared deeply for this Earth, for children, and she fought hard for the rights of every human being to live a life of safety and dignity. She was kind, funny, smart, sincere, loyal, and strong. She would look you in the eye and make you feel like the only person in the room. She would put her neck on the line for the people and principles she believed in, no matter what. Today I mourn the loss of my dear friend and true leader in our community. This world is a darker place without her bright and shining light. Please join me in praying for her family, friends, and community.

This morning the students and staff at Oakland Park Elementary School celebrated their 100th anniversary with a walk down memory lane and some phenomenal student performances! OPE is the longest continuously operated school in Broward County and it actually opened before the City of Oakland Park was even incorporated. For 100 years this school has been a cornerstone of the community, a place generations of families have trusted, returned to, and called their own. What an amazing milestone 💯 Thank you Principal Garcia and the incredible team who made this morning so special.

I had the pleasure of visiting Nova High School’s AI Academy yesterday to check out Mr. Abrantes’ AI 101 and 201 class. It was really amazing to speak with the students and observe the variety of tasks they were engaged in during our visit. Artificial intelligence, when used responsibly, has the power to transform the educational landscape as we know it. Witnessing the amazing work that is already being done by our students is exciting and it helps inform policy decisions moving forward. Thank you Principal Awofadeju and Mr. Abrantes for having us!

This morning I had the pleasure of reading See Marcus Grow by Marcus Bridgewater to a lovely group of Pre-K students at Stephen Foster Elementary. This year’s Read for the Record book explores themes of curiosity, discovery, nurturing, and growth. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Read for the Record literacy campaign and I’m always thrilled to participate! Early literacy is the key to children’s success in school and in life and if you’re reading this I hope you get a chance to sit down and read a book today 📚 Thank you Principal Grimaldo and Ms. Cuesta (reading coach extraordinaire!) for having us this morning.

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Tallahassee for Broward Days and Rally2Tally, joined by nearly 120 BCPS students. During the visit, we were able to discuss BCPS legislative priorities and meet with several elected officials, including the Commissioner of Education, who was gracious with his time. Our students were outstanding and truly showcased the best of Broward County Public Schools!
