Fort Laramie National Historic Site

Fort Laramie National Historic Site The Crossroads of the American West. Fort Laramie National Historic Site in southeastern Wyoming recalls the epic days of the frontier West.
(317)

From 1834 to 1890, forts on this site were important centers of trade, diplomacy, and warfare on the northern Plains. Some of the most vivid figures of expanding America passed this way: trappers, fur traders, missionaries, overland emigrants, Pony Express riders, stage drivers, cowboys, homesteaders, soldiers, and Plains Indians. The pioneers will soon be arriving at Fort Laramie National Historic Site! On Saturday, June 13th, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., visitors can step into the shoes of real families traveling the overland trails who stopped at the fort in 1852 to gather supplies before continuing west.
Complete your mission by collecting all the necessary items and learning what challenges awaited on the trail, and you’ll earn a prize at the visitor center. But be quick, the fort was known to run out of supplies for late arrivals!
Public programs will also be offered at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. by Scottsbluff National Monument and the Pony Express.
We can’t wait to welcome you and celebrate the story of westward emigration during Pioneer Arrival Day!

Can you tell who’s slithering along the path toward the visitor center? It’s our friend, the bull snake, also known as the gopher snake. These reptiles are becoming more active around Fort Laramie as they search for food. As an important part of the fort’s ecosystem, they help keep pests like mice away from our historic buildings. If you spot one, please give it plenty of space, the fort is their home.

The Bats have arrived at Fort Laramie, and now is your chance to study them and learn how the National Park Service and their partners are studying this important animal. Bat night is this Saturday at 8:00pm. We will have public program that will lead us into the night as visitors can help researchers to collect data and watch bats take flight. In addition, at 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30pm, our visitor center will be showing our new bat park film!

We will have benches and chairs provided for visitors, but visitors may bring their own chairs and blankets as the evening could become cooler.

We’re excited to introduce the new Bark Ranger Program at Fort Laramie National Historic Site! Visitors can now earn a Bark Ranger badge by bringing their four legged companions to the park and following all B.A.R.K. principles:
• Bag your pet’s waste
• Always leash your pet
• Respect wildlife
• Know where you can go
Dogs were common mascots in the historic military companies stationed here, providing camaraderie and morale. To honor both past and present pups, visitors can receive their badge by taking a photo or drawing a picture of their “mascot” at the fort. Pick up a program brochure in the visitor center!

Bat Night returns to Fort Laramie National Historic Site on May 30 at 8:00 PM! Join park rangers and visiting bat researchers for an evening of discovery as we explore the incredible bat species that call the fort home.
Bats have lived at Fort Laramie since the military arrived and constructed the historic buildings still standing today. Under National Park Service stewardship, the site has become an important place for researchers studying bat behavior and treating white nose syndrome.
As dusk settles, watch bats take flight using specialized equipment and help scientists record their nighttime activity. It’s a rare opportunity to experience the fort after dark and contribute to ongoing research.
