in 1950, a train carrying 600 Pennsylvania National Guard members from the Wilkes-Barre, Carbondale and Honesdale areas to Camp Atterbury, Indiana, was struck by another train near Coshocton, Ohio, killing 33 Soldiers from the 109th Field Artillery Battalion. The Soldiers were supposed to conduct training at Camp Atterbury before heading to Germany. At about 5:15 a.m., after the train stopped on the tracks to repair a mechanical problem, a passenger train traveling on the same line failed to stop and crashed into the back of the troop train. In addition to the 33 Soldiers that were killed, another 278 were injured. Today, a memorial outside the Kingston Armory in Wilkes-Barre honors the Soldiers who were killed in the crash.

Three Pennsylvania National Guard Soldiers who are members of the All-Guard Endurance Team competed at the 2026 West Virginia Spartan Trifecta Weekend and Trail Experience Aug. 29-30 at Glen Jean, West Virginia.

The event featured several races with distances ranging from a 5K Sprint up to a 21K Beast, as well as Trail 10K and 21K events. The courses test participants with steep hills, unpredictable terrain and slick water features.

🏆 Lt. Col. Deborah Fisher of the 228th Motor Transportation Battalion finished first in her age group and was the 12th overall female finisher in the Spartan Beast 21K and was the sixth overall female finisher in the Sunday Trail 21K.
🏆 Sgt. 1st Class Tyler Lundquist of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion finished second in his age group and was the third overall male finisher in the Saturday Spartan Sprint 5K and was the fifth overall male finisher in the Sunday Trail 21K.
🏆 Staff Sgt. Fiona Cuthbert of 1st Battalion, 110th Infantry Regiment was the third overall female finisher in the Sunday Trail 21K.

In addition to the Spartan events, Lundquist was one of 14 Endurance Team members who also completed and earned a Royal Danish Air Force March Medal on Aug. 28. The 20-kilometer (12.4 miles) ruck march requires participants to carry a minimum of 22 pounds. Lundquist was the fastest male.

: The 201st Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer, or RED HORSE, is an engineering unit in the 193rd Special Operations Wing. The 201st RHS was established on Sept. 14, 1971. It is based at Fort Indiantown Gap and has a detachment assigned to the 111th Attack Wing at Biddle Air National Guard Base. RED HORSE Squadrons are the Air Force's heavy-construction units with engineering capabilities that are similar to those of the Navy Seabees and Army heavy-construction units. The 201st RHS’s mission is to support combat airpower and provide commanders and federal and state authorities a flexible, well-rounded, heavy construction and repair capability anytime, anywhere.

Soldiers with the Pennsylvania National Guard's 35th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Emergency Response Force Package conducted a CBRN response exercise Sept. 2 and 3 at Fort Indiantown Gap. The focus of the exercise was rescuing people from a collapsed structure and mitigating chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear hazards.

A KC-135 Stratotanker from the 171st Air Refueling Wing refuels an F-16 Fighting Falcon from The New Jersey National Guard's 177th Fighter Wing Aug. 25 near the U.S.-Canada border during Exercise AMALGAM DART. Exercise AMALGAM DART is a North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command exercise designed to enhance readiness and strengthen the defense of North America.
